You may have better luck doing this by using 3rd party Explorer replacement program. I use "2xExplorer" personally. It doesn't work well when there's multiple periods in the file name with this particular program. Otherwise, it has a function to do exactly what this topic is trying to do.

I think you can implement an shell extension to do that. A very simple COM implementing IColumnInfo interface and register to the folder.
