getting rid of annoying download stuff

Hello, Whilst browsing the net, and feeling a little adventurous about some downloads that looked tempting I managed to download some stuff that seemed to attach itself all over my computer placing shortcuts on my desktop, links in my 'favourites' on my internet explorer and various other bits and bobs...bloody annoying. I have deleted most of it I think, including all my temporary internet files and links...how can I be sure that there is nothing else on my computer? Is there a program I can run which will get rid of it all? Cheers
