Win 2000 CD Player

Is there any way of disabling the CD player in Win 2000. Each time I load a cd it launches the player. I have deleted the CD Player.exe from the system folder and the recycled bin yet it always comes back to annoy me. Please help.

You might find it simpler to disable the autorun feature on the CD-ROM. This can be done in TweakUI.

You've got two options that I can think of. Which is preferable for you depends on what kind of result you really want. If you just want Windows to use a different CD player then all you need to do is change the file association so that it plays CDs using your prefered player instead of windows built in player. If you don't know how to do it, check the windows help file, it's not hard to do. (Music files on CDs btw are CDA files.) If you just want it to stop autoplaying CDs completely, then you'll need to disable the autorun feature. Just follow this link (on this site) for info on how to do that. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018 Unfortunately option B has a drawback. In Win2k, CD autorun and CD autodetection are the same thing (which is bad). What this means is when you play a CD, then change it to a new one, your CD player (whatever you use) will not detect the new CD and will have problems when you try to play it. To get around this you will either have to shut down and restart the CD player software or use windows explorer to refresh the CD drive... which only works some of the time. It's very annoying if you play CDs on your computer a lot, I've sorta gotten used to it (it still beats upgrading to XP and dealing with all it's annoyances IMHO). Good luck

You can also hold down the shift key as you insert the cd. Holding down the shift key disables autorun for that cd.

Don't forget to delete cdplayer.exe from the dllcache subdirectory beneath system32.
