You could try installing TweakUI and running the "repair icons" function.

I've already tried that...unfortunately it didn't work...Seems as though Windows
has lost it's ablility to display icons, for icon files??

GREAT ZOT!!! DO NOT USE TWEAKUI UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!! Instead, find
the hidden file shelliconcache (should be under C:\Windows) and delete it. This
is a cache file that stores your icons for Windows Explorer and is probably corrupt.
Then reboot.

Then it sounds like you have made an association to the .ICO file extension. The
easiest way to remove it is to go to Control Panel, select Tools, Folder Options,
File Types and scroll down to the file type ICO. Check to see if there is a program
associated with it. There should not be. If there is, delete the file type and
restart.

Chances are, you installed a program that modified the association for ico files
and then did not restore that association properly (or at all) when you removed it.
1. Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
2. Open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (HKCR) key.
3. Scroll down to the .ico key. If it exists, skip to step 6.
4. Create an .ico key.
5. Set the default value to "icofile" (without quotes).
6. Scroll down to the key whose name matches the default value in HKCR\.ico.
7. If that key exists, skip to step 11.
8. Create that key (HKCR\icofile).
9. Set the default value to "Icon File" (without quotes).
10. Create a new key under \icofile called "DefaultIcon" (without quotes).
11. Modify the default value under HKCR\icofile\DefaultIcon to "%1" (without quotes).
12. Close regedit.
Structure should look somewhat like this:
HKCR\.ico
"icofile"
HKCR\icofile
"Icon File"
HKCR\icofile\DefaultIcon
"%1"
Note that "icofile" is unimportant as long as both instances match. "Icon File" is
also unimportant, this is just what is shown for the file's type.
Change takes place immediately. Display may not refresh until reboot, however. TweakUI's
Rebuild Icons will force an immediate refresh.
"%1" can be used to make the following file types show a built-in icon or a thumbnail
for an icon:
exe
cpl
dll
bmp (thumbnail)
icl
ico
lnk

See my other post at:

This has instructions to rebuild the default association for ico files. It would
have been easier had you not removed the file type, but full instructions are included
in case anyone had done so.

Hey, thanks alot.
The same thing happened to me and i have been coming closer and closer to the solution
and finally 1 week later found this website and thread and am now relieved and happy.
I did not know how important those little icons were until this past week of experimenting
and searching for answers.
Thank you all very much.

A quick note of thanks, KDivad... ACDSee invades your files types if you're not
careful during setup, and takes over .ico as well as >30 more types. I removed the
file type instead of changing the default program, but found your repair fix here
at Annoyances. My O/S is Win98 but the reg config you gave worked fine.

Aye, a lot of applications modify your associations without your permission or knowledge.
Then you end up with unfamiliar icons and/or different apps opening when you double-click
a file. This is even more annoying to me than apps that feel the need to do all (or
several) of the following:
1. Folder in Start Menu.
2. Main app's shortcut in Start Menu (under programs).
3. Main app's shortcut in main Start Menu.
4. Shortcut on Desktop.
5. Shortcut in QuickLaunch folder.
6. "Quick access" icon in System Tray.
Do they really think I will have that much trouble finding it if I can figure out
how to turn on the computer in the first place? "Viral Applications" is what I call
programs that try to take over...
[end rant]
Anyway, that fix should work on any 32bit versions of Windows (Win9x, NT4+, ME, 2K,
XP), though you may need to be logged in as an administrator on the relevant systems
for the fix to take properly. I actually made it using 98 as a reference.
If anyone can't figure out how to do the fix, they need only post here and I will
post the contents of a .reg (Registry Entry) file that will make the adjustments
for them.
I'm glad I could help!

This is in reply to KDivad Leahcim's post on a registry repair of the icon file association.
I found that the icons I made and listed in an Icon folder under Windows Explorer
were not showing their respective images. They instead showed the default windows
icon.
All other uses of the icons on the desktop and task bar, favourites, etc worked fine.
I checked the file associations to find the ICO file was not listed. When I tried
to create a new one through the same file association list window, it said that the
extension already exists.
The tweakUI did not repair the problem.
I followed the registry repair as given by KDivad Leahcim, restarted my computer
and it is fixed.
Thought to let you know.

I was having problems with my icons and it was suggested that I reset my display
resolution to a different setting, click apply....then reset it back to what it was
before....and it worked!!! They are all back the way they should be. It seems the
shelliconcache is recreated automatically when you change your color depth!!

Hi!
I've had the same prob for a long time now. I did the registry option as well as
the TweakUI, and deleting the ShellIconCache file options.
Unfortunately, I still have the same prob. I checked control panel for association
of the icon file -- there is no association.
I clicked on the "Change" tab, but a pop-up message comes up saying : "Windows cannot
find the file %1".
Is there a solution to this problem?
Thanks.

Which version of Windows are you using? It doesn't sound like one I am familiar with...
You can try changing %1 to %l (a lowercase "L"), but it shouldn't make a difference.
It kind of sounds like you created an association and not the DefaultIcon ("Windows
cannot find the file %1"), but I doubt you did.
If nothing else, you can always export the HKCR\icofile branch of your registry and
email it to me (kdlsnickers@jwcs.net) and *maybe* I will be able to tell what's going
on. Or, you can send me an email and I'll send you a .reg file that should create
the proper values for you.
Note: To those who read this, I intend to close this email account before too much
longer. When this happens, you won't get any response at all to an email sent to
it (all emails will simply be funneled to oblivion). However, I will try and remember
to post a new address later.

ARRRRRRGGGG.... I found this thread as a glimmer of hope. I have tried everything

I'm having the same problem too. I have winXP Pro. I recently uninstalled EmEditor
(it's a text editing program like TextPad) and all of my file associations for HTM
and HTML document are gone. Their icons are not the default windows icon (sheet of
paper with a blue e) anymore. I tried to reassociate it in Folder Options, pointing
the icon library to iexplorer.exe, but it didn't work. I deleted the iconcache.db
but that didn't fix it either.
So I followed the registry fix here but had to stop at step 8. I couldn't create
another "icofile" key since it already exited in
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ico\OpenWithProgids]
"icofile"=hex(0):
Can anyone here help me?

The registry fix above didn't work for me - but this did:
In Windows Explorer, go to Tools >> Folder Options, then choose the File Types tab.
Scroll down to the ICO file type, then click the Restore button in the extension
details area.
This removed all associations I had made, and put it back so that their own icons
show.

Thanks for the info. It helped me to get back my *.ico displayed properly on. Now
it shows the images besides the file name.
I checked that it was most probably Visual Studio .NET install which corrupted my
*.ico display. My ico files got opened using VS.NET ico editor.
Anyway the registry trick worked and solved my problem.

This problem is so annoying. First time I had this problem few months ago. Back then
I just changed the display resolution and it worked, but not anymore. It seems that
my registry is fine.
These are correct:
HKCR\.ico
"icofile"
HKCR\icofile
"Icon File"
HKCR\icofile\DefaultIcon
"%1"
But in HKCR\.ico I also have "image/x-icon"-data and a folder called "PersistentHandler".
And in HKCR\icofile I have some data called "BrowserFlags" and "EditFlags", and a
folder called "shell". Does those matter?
I have Windows 2000 and most of the icons are showing, but when I install some new
program the icons doesn't display. Help me, please!

Yes omg finally. for the longest time i didnt believe that the registry thing worked
but someone failed to mention that you have to delete any extra values in the HKCR\.ico
and what not also the . id also like to thank EnderGT. on his take of the "Windows
Explorer, go to Tools >> Folder Options, then choose the File Types tab. Scroll down
to the ICO file type, then click the Restore button in the extension details area.
This removed all associations I had made, and put it back so that their own icons
show.
" cuz that was also modified by some icon editors i installed

Jake, Dragonfly & moersealf ,
I share the same problem as you, html and htm files do not show the correct icon,
all other file types do. I've tried all the fixes on this page, including re-associating
the program file and the icon file in the File types window.
Also, it's even weirder - I have an F:/ drive running Raid 0 configuration, and htm
files in the first sub-directory on my F drive display their correct icon, whereas
html files do not, and both htm and html files in deeper sub-directories on this
drive do not show their correct icon. Also neither html or htm on my C:/ drive, which
is just normal, work either.
I'd love a solution if anyone has one for me... please.

I've tried the two methods in this long thread (regedit & Folder options), however
i'm still having problems.
Seems like everyone has a "reset/restore" button on the File Types tab. I use XP
- Media Center and don't have it. Actually I have a "Restore Defaults" button on
the General & View tab.
I also made sure that in regedit, that i take out all the extra items - didn't help
either.
Well, actually the icons i'm having trouble is: "My Documents", "Internet Explorer",
"My Computer", "My Network Places", and "Recycle Bin".
And whats really weird is that the other login on my computer has the proper icons
showing. seems to be a problem with my login only.
I'd appreciate any help :)
Thanks :)

Have a similar issue, HTM and HTML files won’t display an icon. I have tried modifying
my registry ICO and all of that, no joy there either. Has anyone figure this out?

I have a similar issue with HTM files not displaying their proper icon. I installed
CCleaner today and noticed it was removed quite a few "temp" and "cache" files. I
wonder if it removed some file with a cache of icons??? Does anyone else with this
problem use CCleaner also? It got rid of 1.5 GB of what I thought was useless log/temp
files, but now I'm having second thoughts.

I've experienced this problem and simply booting into Safe mode resolved it.

Like ange, I too tried the recommendations to no avail. (I suspect the uninstall
of an icon editor may also have also caused the problem at my end.) However, the
following worked for me. (I'm running under WinXP SP2.)
First I went into My Computer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types and deleted the ICO
entry. I closed Explorer, then reopened, went back to File Types, and created a
"new" entry for ICO. I clicked the "Advanced" button and chose "icon" for the "Associated
File Type". Then saved the result. I exited and then reopened and, voila, there
were those lovely icons in all their glory :-)

Thanks a lot KDivad. That worked perfectly. The problem has happened to me before,
but it was usually fixed with a change of resolution or an uninstall of a recent
suspect program.

what to do for icl?

Hey there Leachim
Hope you're still checking this thread. I succesfully restored my ico file previews
through this technique but was unable to do the same with my icl files. What would
be the correct method of restoring my icl previews in windows by way of the registry
Thank you
