No need to to disconnect the speaker, simply set this values in the registry.
Defaults are set to yes and there is no way to turn this into a no from the gui.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound]
"Beep"="no"
"ExtendedSounds"="no"

What do you do if you are on a restricted network and can't get into things like
the device manager and registry?
The computers don't have the sound card enabled, so instead of making a sound it
still beeps. That's why the changing the sound to a blank sound doesn't work here
either.
I know you can do it, I've done it before...but I forgot how....

If you have the volume control icon in the system tray, right click on it and select
"open volume controls". These controls most likely won't have the PC speaker listed
but this is easy to change. Click "options" then "properties". Scroll down the list
for playback options. Toward the bottom there should be the PC speaker listed. It
may be named PCBeep or PCSpeak or I have even seen it just PCS. Make sure there is
a check in the box next to it and click OK. It should now be listed in the volume
control window. Now all you have to do is click MUTE! :)

That didn't work for me. I wanted the PC speaker muted because I plugged in some
good external speakers. I didn't want them to be drowned out at low volume by the
internal speaker.
What I found was that when you open volume controls you get the array of slider volume
controls. At the bottom of the master column was an 'advanced' button. When I opened
that there was a checkbox to mute the PC speaker. So now all sound goes thru the
external speakers.
