Question about 'Why can't I get the Direct-Cable Connection to work?'

I have a question about connecting between a computer on WIN95 (The guest) and one on WIN2000 (The host) using a Windows Direct Cable Connection using a Belkin Autoswitch. The LPT connection is made satisfactorily and then I get the message on the guest computer that it "Can't find the host computer". From all I can tell I have setup the software on both computers correctly. I was asked the name of the host computer and entered the name listed for it under "devices" in the "My Computer" menu. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this problem?

Can you confirm that the Belkin Autoswitch is a device specifically designed for use in a direct cable connection between LPT ports. Normally the connection is made with a cross over cable so the wires connect to different pins on each plug. Parallel cables are not suitable for direct cable connection.

I have been trying to do a direct connect between WIN98 and WIN2000 systems using the 'direct connect' feature in both windows. First I installed the drivers and tried a BELKIN USB to USB connection, then a parallel port 'cross-over' cable and finally a serial port 'cross-over' cable. When none of these worked, I installed PC Anywhere and attempted again, using first one, then another of the three methods of physically connecting the hardware. None of them worked. This connection should not be so difficult. I have done this before between WIN98 and WIN95, with the same parallel and serial cables, successfully. I am sure the difficulty is with WIN2000. One of the notes I read while browsing through this web site stated that WIN2000 is very security conscious and I suspect there may be an identity/password problem between WIN2000 and an early operating system. Yes, the Belkin autoswitch has a mode allowing a Direct Cable Connection.

You need to enable your 2K machine to support connections to older OS's. Check this link out........... support.microsoft.com/support/ kb/articles/q258/2/99.asp

I know that this is an old post but for those that are now just finding this to be a problem. There is a bug in the parallel port for win2k. It was fixed with win2k service pack 2 for those that have the older version. There is dialog for this problem at the microsoft web site http://support.microsoft.com and do a search for "direct cable connection"

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000pro/maintain/makeconn.asp?frame=true Users at the other end—the ones who want to connect to your computer—don't need to run Windows 2000; they can connect with Windows 95 or Windows 98. But they must have a local user account on your computer, or Windows 2000 security will rebuff their logon attempts.

Yes! I was having the same problem and this was the solution. FYI, the new link is:

and the pertinent text is:

  RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1.	On the computer running Windows 2000, right-click
My Network Places, and then click Properties.
  2.	Right-click the direct cable connection, and then
         click Properties.
  3.	On the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click
         Settings.
  4.	Click to select the Allow older MS-CHAP version for
Windows 95 Servers check box, click OK, and then
         click OK.
  5.	Close the "Network and Dial-up Connections"
         window.

Good sleuthing, Marc.

Glenn
