Have you checked the volume control panel, make sure is not mute and also check sure all connection are correct...

Try Clicking start/programs/accessories/entertainment/volume control. Click options and properties. Be sure all desired check boxes are selected. RealPlayer reset these on my 2000 machine as a way of flipping me off when I unstalled their once-useful-utility-turned-viral-spyware.

Had the same problem. Saw a post regarding having a mixer in the task bar which I have. Set it to coincide with my speaker configuration (which it wasn't) and voila! I have windows sounds now. Thanks!

I have had the same problem (I have a Soundblaster from Creative). I did not get any errors, rei-installed all sound drivers but have no speaker symbol in the taskbar and also do not have any sound. I could solve this problem with the device Manager. At the Audio controller there had been listed only two entries: Creative Gameport Joystick and Creative Soundblaster Audio. But there has to be a Legacy driver too (in my case Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128 Legacy Driver). This third entry I got through going to the properties(settings) of the "Creative Sound Blaster...". The driver section showed, that I used drivers from Windows. I chose change driver and choosed the option "use from disk" and chose the original driver from my sound card. Then WindowsMe prompted that this driver is not tested and signed by Microsoft. I clicked the warning away and had sound...!

I had similar problems. Upgraded to XP, installed and unistalled software including RealPlayer and LimeWire and changed houses. Suddenly I realized I had no sound. The computer said the device was working correctly (my SoundBlaster Live! Value). That sound card was an upgrade when I bought my Micron PC; it's in a PCI slot. Micron disabled the sound built into the motherboard but didn't remove or cover the jacks. I spent about 4 very frustrating hours until I realized I was correctly using the incorrect jacks! Oh well, I've got the fresh drivers at least. More good information in the MS Knowledge Base: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313022&Product=winxp Thanks for the other ideas here.

Here's a fix for "No sound on Windows XP"
Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at 12:23 pm
Posted by mokuji_1974 (1 messages posted)

I get this problem every weeks or two, and the only way I've found to get everything working agin is to (in "Hardware") delete/uninstall any sound cards you might have installed, then do a search for "New Hardware". As far as I can tell my problem is because I have an on-board sound card that died and I installed another sound card, so they have a tendency to screw things up (even when they both claim to be "working properly" and have "no conflicts"). Anyway, this has worked for me EVERY time this happens. ~Russ~

I was having the same problem every couple of days (lose sound except for windows "chimes"). Although my motherboard never had an on-board card, and i've always used Soundblaster cards. I can temporarly fix the problem by installing a third party driver for my card. When the problem comes back I install the windows driver or the Creative Labs driver with patches. The problem always comes back though and I have yet to find a permanent solution.

There is a Microsoft tech note on this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;262256 Note: this only applies if you are not getting sounds from windows programs but other sounds are OK.

An easy solution which should work is to go to windows device manager, right click on your sound device and select disable. After that is finished. wait for a second or two or maybe a little more and right click and select enable. After a few seconds you should be ready to use youtube one again.:)
