We have just purshased a the latest Sony Digital still camera Cybershot DSCF707.
We have Windows 2000NT operating system. We can't get the computer to 'read' the
camera . It knows the hardware is attached but will not 'see' the Removable Drive
that represents the camera.Hence we cannot download the images. My laptop running
Windows ME has no problem.

When you say the computer knows the hardware is attached, do you mean that it shows
up as a device in the Device Manager without any red or yellow marks?

Yes, the computer thinks the hardware is working properly. It also show up on the
Taskbar down near the clock- you have to eject it to unplug it or the computer complains.
The way it operates normally is as soon as you plug it in and turn it on a Removable
Drive icon appears in My Computer next to the other drives. In our new computers
operating Windows 2000 NT the removable drive doesn't appear.
Hope you have a solution. I have HSC students waiting on the solution.
Thanks

I had the same problem with the same camera on my ibm notebook win200 professional.

problem and provide a usb patch
which is installed on my desktop. search sony.com

I have the same sort of issues with my newer Canon A10. All my computers are IBM,
running W2K at current patch levels. The HP215 Digicam worked with everything, the
Canon A10 only worked with my Thinkpad T21 and not with my NetVista A60. The Plug
and Pray on the A60 id's the camera and model, but not enough info gets installed
or whatever to communicate with the camera to get pictures or to update firmware.
I even put an add-on USB2.0 pci card in and that made no difference.
Other camera management software does not see the data, and sometimes not even
the name and type. A hardware guru I know said it was on-camera firmware and particular
machine issues, probably the particular bios/config.... but didn't know if it was
timing, gremlins or whatever.....

It's been a year since I posted this, and we have had some sort of solution for a
while. The problem (in our case) related to privileges / access on the network. Since
we work in a large school with around 1500 people having access, there are restrictions
on access WHEN you are logged on to the network. We solved the problem by setting
up a separate account that accesses JUST the COMPUTERS. This then allows us to ADD
hardware (which is effectively what you are doing when you use a plug and play device.
IT is a pain in the neck having to log on and off but it allows us to download our
images and preserves security of the network.
