The Tools menu in any Windows Explorer window has a Folder Options submenu. Click
the File Types tab and scroll down to the type you want to change. Edit the definition
or delete it and next time Windows tries to open a file of that kind it will ask
Open with?

Is there any way to have the "always use this program to open these files" tick automatically
unticked when the "open with" window is opened? I have several times ly associated
the wrong file types with the wrong programs because i forgot to untick the tick.

Permanently untick "always use this program.." has been dealt with under //members.aol.com/axcel216/newtip16.htm
A change has to be made in the Registry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command
Change the end of the command (now "...%1") in
"...%1 %2", so just add %2 after a space. It works!

Following my reply just forwarded, I realise that this is the windows 2000 platform.
I use windows 98. The solution mentioned was originally for windows 98. I do not
know if this problem is present in windows 2000, neither do I know if this solution
will work in that case.

I have two machines, one with Windows 98, and the other with 2000. I tried the trick
on both. It worked fine on 98. But when I did it on 2000, the location of the Registry
data was the same, but the command was “%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL
%1”. I made the change and when I opened the “open with…” window, the “always use”
box and words were grayed out; they were not tickable. So if you plan to never tick
that box, the trick works for Windows 2000.

In this same vein, how can I now change each icon so that it will open the desired
application when I double-click it. This question is specifically for shortcuts
on my desktop with a .lnk extension. Each one's target app is different of course.
Currently, each .lnk icon displays the generic Microsoft icon, but the properties
of each show the correct target app.

Ok, I have a similar problem, I stupidly used my Photoshop shortcut as an open with
option, and now everytime I use the open with option I see the annoying (unworking
open with option) ne1 know how i can get rid of this for the XP version, also if
i can remove them from the recommended programs part, in the open with window
