Found MTU value with ping, but registry key fails

I have a question about Can't
access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection:
I have used ping as instructed to find an MTU value that works for my client machine.
The value is 1454. I have created the MTU registry key as instructed and rebooted,
but that did not solve the problem.
Can anyone help?
Let me describe my setup and problem:
* I have two machines connected via a crossover LAN cable. One machine has another
Ethernet card connecting it to an external ADSL modem (=host machine). This Internet
Connection is shared by the other machine (= client machine).
* The host machine works fine. On the client machine I can browse any site but I
cannot, however, send email through web based services like Hotmail and Yahoo!Mail
from that machine.
Sound like just the case for your article to solve, but alas - no.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Uri Goldstein.

Download Dr.TCP http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html to the client computer.
Launch the application. Select your Ethernet card in the drop down menu, set the
MTU to 1424, reboot and you'll be fine.

Bob, thanks for your help, but 1424 didn't do it for me.
Any other ideas? Maybe I need to set an MTU value on the host machine too? What
is RWin and is it relevant to my problem?
Thanks,
Uri.

Hi Bob, and everyone out there,
Just wanted to let you know that I got lucky and solved my problem.
I had to reformat my Host machine and reinstall Windows2000 there (performance
issues) and "miraculously" my problem went away. I am now successfully sharing my
Host's internet connection with a Client machine.
To conclude - I cannot even be sure the problem originated with MTU values. Nor
am I sure what caused it or whether the solution can be replicated.
Regards,
Uri Goldstein.
