Can ping but no show in Network Neighborhood

I have a question about Connect
to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:
Hello! I just installed Windows 2000 Advanced Server in my computer which is connected
to more than 30 computers in a LAN. It could ping all the computers and the other
computers can ping mine but my computer does not show in their Network Neighborhood
and their computers do not show in my Network Neighborhood. All the workgroups,
usernames and passwords are fine. My computer was working fine when it had Windows
NT installed. Now that I replaced it with Windows 2000, we can't see each other
anymore in the Network.
Please give me suggestions on how to fix this. Thanks!

ok theres several things here that could be the problem. have you ensured the file
and print sharing is enabled on all the machines and that each machine has its own
unique IP (if not using DHCP). you mention the workgroup and username and passwords
are ok, are they all a member of the same workgroup and what operating system are
the other 30 machines using ? If they are using anything other than win2k you will
need to add usernames and passwords of the win98 machines to the server.

Hello!
Thanks for the reply DoC but I already found the solution elsewhere. My answer to
all of your questions was 'yes' since the LAN was working fine when my computer was
on Windows NT. I also made sure all the usernames and passwords were already in
the Win2k server.
The problem was that I did not install NETBIOS nor NETBEUI since I did not intend
to use them at all (which I found out that I was wrong!). I found out that when
you want to LAN together Windows 98/95 computers and Windows 2K computers, all of
them should turn on NETBIOS or NETBEUI. I prefer NETBIOS since it seems to perform
faster than NETBEUI.
Well, that's it!

of a Win2003 domain.

Follow on to ping but no show in Network Neighborhood

Hi Jojo,
I have bumped into the problem many times myself and "stumbled" onto your thread
and appreciate your explanation. A related question remains..
I remember reading somewhere that after installing the various protocols it was necessary
to "wait a while for the network to establish some directory of names/IP addresses"
(Loosly quoted here). I recall somewhere 12 minutes being mentioned.
I wondered if you were aware of a way to "force" this update of the network lookup
table or some way to avoid "waiting in vain" for things to happen?
Oh! By the way your message said that you found the answer "elswhere" Can you tell
me where you managed to find such "pearls of wisdom"
Thanks
