More Keyboard Shortcuts

If you have a Windows key on your keyboard (located between Ctrl and Alt), more useful shortcuts present themselves:

Windows Key + E:  Opens Explorer
Windows Key + R:  Opens the Run dialog
Windows Key + D:  Shows the desktop
Windows Key + M:  Minimises all windows
Windows Key + F:  Shows the Find Files dialog
Windows Key + Ctrl + F  Shows the Find Computers dialog
Windows Key + Pause/Break  Shows System Properties
Windows Key + Tab  Cycles through applications (Enter will select)

Note that the D and M shortcuts differ in that M does not minimise modal windows...

START + SHIFT + M will undo Minimize all, even after you open another window.... which is an annoyance with XP's "Show Desktop Feature" since "Show Open Windows" is imediatly disabled after you open one window. START + SHIFT + M can, however, be used after START + D (Show the Desktop) thankfully.

There are Close Active Window and Minimize All Windows commands, but is there a Close All Windows command? It sure would be handy. Thanks, Mattiwos

Not as far as I know. The nearest shortcut to this is for explorer windows. If
they are set to open a new window every time you open a folder, then holding Shift
whilst clicking the "X" close button will close all previously opened windows too.

However, it techniquely shouldn't be difficult to write an application (e.g. in Visual
Basic) that would ask every running program to close...

I've used KillWin, and it seems to do the trick: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6288,00.asp

To close or minimise a group of windows opened with the same application in XP, right click on the application name in the task bar. Select the "Close Group" or "Minimise Group" option. Don't know if it works in other Windows versions.

I know this is probally abit late now, but may be useful for others. Following on
from the previous messages.

To close all explorer windows (where each folder opens in a new window --- Parent-Child)
as mentioned you can hold down shift and click on the x to close all the windows,
but you can also use shift+alt+F4 (this works a treat).

However there are things to note:
1:>
The shift+alt+F4 command muxt be executed from the last child window
opened, if executed higher-up it will only close all windows up to the parent and
leave all child windows below open. This is usefull in you have opne 20 windows to
get to your folder than want to close the other 19.

2:>
If you open explorer windows from differnt sessions i.e. have 2 parent windows then
this shortcut will only close the windows of that particular parent-child group (bear
in mind the first point above).

Regards
Mandeep
