Correction. Should read:
"regsvr32 /u thumbvw.dll"

After opening the command box, change the current directory to C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32
then run the command: regsvr32 /u thumbvw.dll
This should do it.

The file thumbvw.dll does not exist on my Win XP installation. Any other ideas? Thanks.

For some reason, my installation of Win XP installed into the Windows folder. Regardless,
the file you mentioned doesn't exist in the system32 folder.

This is so ****ed irritating. I tracked down the source in XP to C:\WINNT\System32\shimgvw.dll.
Use the same technique to unregister listed in the other postings or, what I
have done is less elegant but more easily remembered and reversed is to, in order:
1. rename C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache\shimgvw.dll to C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache\shimgvw.dll.XXX
2. rename C:\WINNT\System32\shimgvw.dll to C:\WINNT\System32\shimgvw.dll.XXX
The order is important, because if you rename the file in System32 first, the
the file protect automation will replace it before you can rename the cached version.
NOW, does anyone know how to make the default view NOT be thumbnails?

That didn't even work for me... shimwhatever dll kept getting replaced in BOTH locations.
You know... my WIFE's laptop does not have the default view to thumbnails. I need
to figure this out. I HATE that setting.
I'm thinking... shimgvw.dll has to do with the fax/picture viewer... so I'm going
to mess with that a little and see what I get.

Ok, i typed in 'regsvr32 thumbvw.dll' and my PC displayed the message
'DLLRegisterServer in Thumbview.dll Succeeded'
I looked at my thumbnails and they still don't display the picture.
Ive rebooted they still don't display the picture.
I've deleted the two Thumbview.dll files and replaced them with the same file from
a working Pc ...
Guess what - Still No Luck !!
Is there anything else i could do ??

I've the same issue with a Win2000 laptop. Recently, the thumbnail view began working
as you describe. I wonder if a recent patch
(MS) may have caused this behavior. If you find a solution, please pass it on to
me.
Thanks!

in XP
Run regedit, search for this key and delete it:
"{3F30C968-480A-4C6C-862D-EFC0897BB84B}"
you will never see that thumbnail again.
Export this key advanced if you want to restore the thumbnail feature later on.

Hi
You guys seem to know what you are talking about.
I, like a fool, gave my lady an adminitrative profile and spooky things started to
happen ...The one which has stumped me is all of the pictures which used to be displayed
as thumbnails in folders now apear as win fax and picture viewer icons. I want my
thumbnails back.
What is it that ,in XP, creates folder thumbs?
I asume it is something to do with the misterious disapearence of either micromedia
flash or win fax pict viewer both of which have vanished.
Its like she was put here to test me for some great thing i must do in the future....or
she just hates me!
Any ideas?

Wanted to thank you for posting this KBase article.
Was searching for a solution to reENABLE the actual view of the thumbnail view (vs.
the icon of the program opening the thumbnail).
This kBase resolved the problem.
