The answer is to hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE and choose Task Manager. Then selecting the
Processes Tab, try to figure out which processes are being run in the tray. Usually
the tray programs are at the bottom of this list. For instance, if you had Norton
Antivirus running in the tray, it would be called NAVAPW32.EXE in the Processes Tab.
(I do NOT recommend disabling that one though!!!) Usually the names are relevant
to the program being run.
The Good: If you attempt to disable a process the system needs to use to keep running,
it won't let you do it.
The Bad: You will have to disable the unwanted tasks EVERY TIME YOU REBOOT.
Many programs that use the tray icon allow you to choose their settings from the
icon itself. If you right-click the icon for America Online, for example, it has
a Settings or Preferences tab that lets you decide whether you want to have the icon
pop up when you start the machine or not. For the ones that don't have this feature,
try disabling them in the Task Manager.
Hope this was helpful in some way.

Is there some way to get rid of the tray icons for good, so you don't have to redo
that every time you reboot? Thanks in advance.

Edit the following registry keys and place semicolons in front of any command line
that you do not wish to have startup every time that your machine starts and you
login. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
