Question about 'Change a file association on the fly'

I have a question about Change
a file association on the fly:
When I right click on the file name in Explorer and roll-over "open with," the list
of program names includes programs I no longer have and Windows refuses to add more
to the short list.
Is there a way I can "reset" the short list?
