Actually, I'll answer both questions at the same time.
Windows Key + E opens windows explorer
Windows Key + R opens the Run menu
Windows Key + Pause/Break opens System Properties
Windows Key + M clears the desktop
Windows Key + D same as M
I think there are few more but I don't remember them offhand.

You can also download and install the program Winkey and it allows you to make more hotkeys using the Windows Key.
