Question about 'Enabling or Disabling Automatic Windows Update'
Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at 11:49 am Posted by Jade
(1 messages posted)
I have a question about removing the annoying windows automatic update on my computer.
I have windows 2000 and according to MS - uninstallation is not available. I downloaded
this by accident and now want to get rid of it. I would like to manually check for
my own updates when Im good and ready - and not have it pop up on me everytime I
start windows.
Thank you!

Control Panel, Automatic Updates Icon, Uncheck the box "Keep computer up to date",
click apply. This will turn off the automatic update feature and the pop-up balloon.

Here is your solution as it worked for me. Run Msconfig.exe for Windows 2000.
(if you don't have it, it is available for free on the web or I can send it to you.)
Now the pricks were a little tricky. Instead of running the updates as a startup,
they run it as a service, so go into the services tab. And look for "Automatic Updates".
Guess what, all you have to do is uncheck the box and you are done. I hope it
works for you. This way you are not messing with the registry and it is foolproof.....Warren

Is there a way to put Windows updates on "hold" on client computers and distribute
them when necessary from the server?
In other words, we would ultimately like to have our Windows 2000 Server download
the updates, install them on test machines, verify the proper functionality of the
updates, and then distribute them when WE"RE ready onto the client pc's in the network.
Any suggestions?

I am using Windows 2000 Professional Version 5.00.2195 SP 1 and I do not find the
"Automatic Updates" when using MSConfig.exe and looking in Services or by going to
Control Panel ->Services. "Automatic Updates" can not be found in either location.
Do you have any other ideas on how I could fix this problem?

Hi,
I've spent all day on this after I "upgraded" to the slower IE 6 from IE 5. Really
pissed me off...
Two ways to do this...
1) Control Panel -> Automatic Updates -- uncheck
Keep my computer up to date. At top of dialog.
This removes the tray icon.
2) Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services --
Highlight Automatic updates and right click on Properties. The Strartup type: Pulldown
has Automatic, Manual, Disabled. I set it to disabled.
If you notice the path to the executible it will be:
C:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe -k wugroup
All and all, this is pretty slimey on MS's part -- to be expected I guess.
Probably could find it in the Services key somewhere in the registry...

this is a simple thig to do altho one of the many replies may say the same thing
bt this dosent require installing any utilities or reg edits and is the proper way
to stop auto updater. go to control panel and open automatic updates, here you can
"turn it off". if you realy want to kill it at the source you should from control
panel go to administrative tools, then to services, find automatic updates, right
click on it, click proterties, dropdown next to startup type and chose disabled.
done and gone never to returne "until maby you install the next serice poke micro$oft
hacks up"

Go to Control Panel, Click on System, Select and Click the Update TAB, then click
as appropriate to turn off the update feature. This inactives automatic update.
There are several way to do this. WHat I cannot find out, is how to then remove the
corresponding icon from the tray. MS has hidden that control well as it is not in
startup, nor can I find it in the list of running programs!??

I have spybot installed and gave two problems having installed service pack 2, these
were diable notices of firewall and another security notice, I set these values to
0 as I did with HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced,
3) Modify or create DWORD value EnableBalloonTips and set it to 0.
This got rid of the annoying icon in tray. Unfortunately I cant recall the reg changes
and forgot to note them, run spybot and it ought to find them as it gave a notice
that couldnt be removed until reboot, however, this failed and I had to reset the
values manually.

Found the reg keys as follows.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotice
-set at 1 change to 0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotice -
set at 1 change to 0
Changing these got rid of the update icon.

Also.
Disable WSC
Click Start ? Run, and type services.msc
Scroll down until you locate Security Center.
Right-Click Security Center and select Properties.
Click the drop down and change the Startup Type from Automatic to Disable.
Click OK.
Right-click Security Center and click Stop.
Close all windows you opened.

The same process for disabling Automatic updates in XP is basically the same for
2000. From a previous forum is true for 2000:
Aloha
Don
-------------------------
Regarding Windows XP automatic updates: You can disable this in a two-step process.
Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Administrative Services. Right-click
on "Automatic Updates," and then click on "Properties." Select "Disabled," and close
the window. Then locate "BITS," or "Background Intelligent Transfer Service," and
disable that as well. This will stop Windows from phoning home and abusing your precious
memory to do it. Hope this helps. Rick
