Question about 'Customize My Computer'
Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at 12:11 pm Posted by Nicholas Hall

I have a question about Customize
My Computer:
Namely, why doesn't it work in 2K? The registry modification puts a second "Open"
option in the right click menu, but the default one remains, and remains default.
This is very annoying.

Yup!
I'm not sure if it applies back to W2K, but my experience with XP has been you must
also modify the default value in the "shell" key: this seems to be used (or at least,
usable) to direct Windows to the default action.
Thus, you might call your new key "Explorer" instead of "Open", and set the default
value to "Explorer".

He is right, however you can also just point the default in the "shell" key to Open
(the key that was made in "shell")

Thanks for that, it solved my problem. Note that you can combine this with the tip
about making Explorer open in the right folder (Using Windows) by making the value
in the "command" registry value have the suggested switches. That is the value associated
with the default key in
\HCR\CLSID\{20D04...}\SHELL\EXPLORER\COMMAND
should be set to
%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /n, /e, c:\
if you want Explorer to open in C:\ (change the last parameter if you want it open
other than in C:\) It stops it opening that annoying "My Documents" folder.
Why, by-the-way do Microsoft insist on such condescending names - like "My Network
Places" and so on? How old do they think the average computer user is? - six???

Try this tip, which I got from http://www.itworld.com/nl/win_admin_tips/03152002/
Right-click the Windows Explorer shortcut that you use to run the program and choose
Properties. When the Windows Explorer Properties dialog box opens, click the Shortcut
tab. Click in the Target entry box, and then press End. Add to the end of the existing
line /e, c:\. The complete line in the Target entry box should now be
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, c:\
The /e switch tells Windows Explorer to open in the two pane explorer mode and the
c:\ tells it to open in folder C:\.

Indeed. However it still did not work under my Win2000 SP4.
The default key under the "Open" key we created is of type REG_SZ. As I noticed
with the other default values here, they are all of type REG_EXPAND_SZ.
How to fix?
Export some other key as a reg file and you see that that this REG_EXPAND_SZ seems
to mean that they are stored as UNICODE?? HEX??? I don't know, just export the "Manage"
key to a .REG file, open it with notepad, replace "Manage" with "Open" (what we had
created) and load the reg file again.
Now the type of the default value under command is no longer REG_SZ but REG_EXPAND_SZ.
It has the %windir\sys32\mmc.... of the manage command, just replace that with the
explorer.exe command of your liking and it worked on my box.
Good explorer command? explorer.exe /n, /e, ....
Now I don't want explorer to expand my C:\ and I also don't want to have it expand
the mydocs. I want the behaviour you get when you press the windows button+E. Any
ideas? :-)

I did this on my windows 2000 box
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Explorer\command]
@="Explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}"
and it opened My Computer with Explorer

I forgot about this change I also had to make so I would get the two paned window
with the folders on the left.
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell]
@="Explorer"

You want;
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, c:\
-Cheers
