I have a question about Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:

QUESTION: How do I configure my 2 network computers (Desktop Windows XP Home Edition HOST Computer with an Ethernet Modem to my local dial-up ISP Server and Laptop Windows 2000 Professional CLIENT computer) using a Linksys Workgroup Switch and Belkin Twisted-wire RJ45 cables? NETWORK SETUP: New Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Workgroup 5-port Switch Model No: EZXS55W Version 2.0, 1 ea. Belkin 7 ft. 10BaseT (Twisted Wire) Cable connected to the Laptop (Windows 2000) Docking Station's internal System Adapter RJ45 connector to the Switch RJ45 connector and 1 ea. 50 ft. RJ45 Cable connected to the Switch to the Desktop (Win XP) computer. COMPUTER SETUP: I have a Windows XP Home Edition Desktop as the HOST computer and want to connect my Windows 2000 Professional Laptop Docking station as the CLIENT computer.

Yes Haley, I did finally figure it all out. I made the Desktop my primary computer and use it as my network server. I connected my dial-up phone line to the Desktop w/MS Windows XP. Then I ran a twisted wire cable (RJ45 connectors) from the Desktop to a Linksys Workgroup Switch. Then I ran another twisted wire cable (RJ45 connectors) to the docking station for my Laptop w/Windows 2000 and disconnected my Laptop modem. My Laptop now runs thru my Desktop and we can't see any delays because the Lynksys switch handles the traffic to our local ISP deial-up server. You will have to go in and configure using Ethernet both computers so they are accessing each other thru each pc's Adapters. Hope this helps, Al Barrs ###

I have my system set up (as ignorant as I am, as well as I understand it) similar to what you describe. The critical sentence I need help with in your reply is :"You will have to go in and configure using Ethernet both computers so they are accessing each other thru each pc's Adapters." I have my laptop connected to my desktop using a Linksys router, PC cards, and ethernet cables. However it is set up (a buddy did it for me) the network connection works great: I can transfer data both ways on either computer just fine, and I have no complaints about it or the hardware. Since I do not have DSL and therefore cannot leave my modem connection on permanently, what need is for my laptop to be able to initiate the modem on my desktop to dial in, and disconnect when it is done. This way, I only have to connect the RJ45 connector to my laptop, and not have to use a seperate (and redundant) phone line to my laptop. I get the impression from reading the Win 2000 help files that there has to be some setting in Windows 2000 Dial-Up and Network Adapters to allow this, but I can't decipher how to set it up. Shot in the dark here, just thought I would throw this out in the open to see if you knew what I missed. Thanks

Hello Joe: (APR 8, 2003) What I did was setup my desktop as the 'host' computer (network server) and use the desktop modem to access my ISP via a dedicated dial-up telephone line. I designated my laptop/docking station, as the 'client' pc. I disconnected my laptop modem completely from the dial-up phone line, but can still use it if the desktop is down or off. The critical part was configuring the laptop to communcate to the desktop via the network. Once that was done we were able to use the same dedicated dial-up phone line to access our ISP server and the Internet at the same time because we have a 'switch' installed in our network. Hope this helps...Al +++++++++++++++++++++++++++APR 8th
