How to stop qttask from loading in Win2000
Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at 6:34 am Posted by Tim
(1 messages posted)
I have tried everything I can think of to stop Qttask.exe (Quicktime's annoying little
program that loads at startup). I've tried deleting it from my HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
entry in the registry, as well as tried to find a flag to set in the Quicktime Control
Panel to stop it from loading. However, if I load a Quicktime video, as soon as
I start the computer again, there it is. Does anyone have an end-all solution to
this other than uninstalling Quicktime?

Try this:
Start Regedit
Go to HKLM,Software,Microsoft,Windows,CurrentVersion,Run
Double-click Quick Time Task
put semicolon in front of
"C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
OK
Close Regedit

Thanks, Bob. This was an annoyance to me, too.
In my machine in which I use Windows XP, to find "qttask.exe" after running regedit,
you must first go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," after which the climb down the tree is
exactly the same.

What's the best way to handle qttask in WinMe? I tried to close it by Ctrl-Alt-Del
before installing or uninstalling, but this causes an error message, a black screen,
and an "improper shutdown".

A great utility for finding all such annoying programs is Autoruns from sysinternals.
It is free and written in assembly so it is fast and small. You can download it at
http://www.sysinternals.com/files/autoruns.zip. It also works in any version of windows
and navigates the registery for you.

actually, you can disable this option. if using QT6, go to control panel and double-click
the QT icon. Select 'Browser Plug-in' from the drop down list, you should see 'Quick
Time system tray icon' option.

Actually M L, this doesn't stop qttask from loading. Just stops the icon from appearing
in the sys tray.

1) Do a file search for qttask.exe
2) Rename all instances of qttask.exe to
qttask2.exe
3) restart your computer
Now qttask can't load, but won't generate an error message. You can still view .mov
files just fine.
Good luck!

that's right on money. additionally, you could just rename it qttask.exe.old

Actually, I just ran a search for 'qttask' (in Win2000), found it in the C:\Programs\Quicktime
folder and deleted it, and it still hasn't come up on reboot even after using the
movie player.
There did use to be an option to turn the taskbar icon on or off, but I haven't seen
it in this latest version.
It pisses me off when any program just inserts itself all over your computer without
asking!

delete qttask to remove for good

Well Paul, because QTTASK.exe
AUTOmatically re-adds itself to the registry hive and says RESTART, NO MATTER what.
that's why you have to
a) kill the current qttask.exe process and
b) renanme or delete the qttask.exe file (do a search on it)
PS: qttask is ONLY used for the system tray... nothing else!

Thanks for the (civil) response! I am, however, guilty of not noticing the Win2000
part of the msgs. I apologize! That's perhaps why it was loading in start-up, but
the 'icon' was not in my system tray -- also, my qttask is found in /windows/system
-- not in the location others have mentioned.
Paul.

Try deleting the file, as it really does nothing, or simply renaming it. But first......very
important......stop it from running through your task manager FIRST, as it will "re-create"
itself if you don't do this first! Then when you reboot after deleting or renaming
it it should be gone!

Just to mention this does not work.
I have done this repeatedly ...
Each time I reboot this edited entry disappears ...
Each time I listen via quick time the qttask.exe places itself in startup ...
I have not found how to stop this and I detest this with a passion ...
I uninstalled quicktime out of my hatred for this but only to find that in order
to hear things on web pages it seems I must have quicktime ...
With my Windows98 I uninstalled quicktime and my Windows Media Player was used by
default and it did not place such autostart entries in my startup menu and I am trying
to figure out how to make this happen with XP ...
If I can ever figure this out I will never use quicktime again because I do not like
anything that 'tells me what to do' on my computer :o)

This One Works ...
File search is for qttask.exe
Which my XP did not locate and I detest XP search because it never finds my stuff
and I have to go manually find everything but that is another gripe lol
I manually went over to C:\Program Files\QuickTime\ and inside this directory I did
find qttask.exe and I renamed it to qttask2.exe ...
I rebooted system and went to my website where I have a file to use to try this out
and I heard the file and qttask.exe did not place itself into my start menu ...
Now I have a same problem with realsched so I will now begin seeking out answers
for this so that it will stop placing itself into my start menu :o)

What i did was to download and install the latest version of Quicktime (you can get
it at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/). Then, reboot and do the full uninstall.
That should remove the qttask.exe file and the tray icon.
Hope this can help you.

Does anyone know what's going on with this - my display has changed to 16 bit color

The way that worked for me was to use my "Webroot Spysweeper" program, that features
a selection that enables the user to disable any startup program that you desire.
Spysweeper is meant to stop adware and spyware that also runs on startup, similar
to quicktime, and that's why it works. It costs a bit of money but it's well worth
it!

did you try to remove it from your startup program?
push the start button then click on run, then push ok.
click on the startup tab and unclick what you don't want to start running anytime
it feels like it. for instance everytime i turned on my computer, even if i wasn't
online, limewire would constantly try to load

Stop Quicktime loading at startup once and for all.
I have tried removing from registry and mscofig but
nothing worked. The following worked for me;
Rename the following files:
QTPlugin.ocx to QTPluginXX.ocx
qttaskXX.exe to xqttaskXX.exe
The files are at Windows/system (For WinME)
The usesless qucktime icon never appeared again
So far no problems.

Regarding win xp or windows me or win 2000
the most simple way to remove qttask from startup is
go to quicktime folder and rename qttask.exe to
qttask.exe.old (change file extention) and voila u r
done. No more qttask for you.
Thanx

1st off, viola is french for violation.
2nd of all, anything short of changing the exe(makes it useless) &/or removing the
entire program(easier said than done, the start-up service returns if reg isn't cleared
completely) does NOT make the start-up service desist. It will re-appear after you've
run the program. Everytime. F Apple and their I-chit.
So, who were you calling an idiot?

I have a pretty foolproof method that takes care of everything. Right click on the
file and open it with notepad. Delete ALL of the code. Problem solved. It doesn't
matter if it gets turned on for restart or anything. The file is still there, the
name is the same, it just doesn't do anything. There is no more chance of it doing
anything, unless, of course, you re-install Quicktime. If so, just repeat.

Hi
I have the same error message come up - Qttask has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL.
Qttask will now close. The mouse is frozen and I can't seem to get past this error
message into the computer. Can anyone help me? This is an old PC with Windows ME
edition. I just want to clean it up and retrieve my photos of it and then possibly
sell it.

Sunny_az, you're a little harsh, and also quite incorrect. (And yes, I know, delayed
reaction, but I didn't need this discussion until the latest install.) From MSN
Encarta Dictionary (and a huge number of other sources):
voi·lą [ vwaa l ] interjection
Definition:
there you are: used to bring somebody's attention to something, especially in order
to elicit appreciation or approval
[Mid-18th century. < French< voi "see!" + lą "there"]
(And viola is a musical instrument.)
But I digress...actual reason for writing is that many of the methods mentioned on
this page don't work with the latest version of QT. I had to dig, and found qttask.exe
under HKLM/SOFTWARE/Apple Computer, Inc.\Quick Time\ActiveX -- at which point adjustments
can be made.

So far I just compiled an EXE that exits immediately and replaced QTTASK.EXE with
it. I renamed the new EXE as QTTASK.EXE and I kept a copy of the original QTTASK.exe
around just in case.
Started QT yesterday and exited it. 2 Reboots later and no icon in the task bar.
There might be free compilers for free languages available on the web, just google
for them. Build a "empty" exe that does nothing but exit right away and it might
help.
