''mail received'' tune replaced by Speaker beep

All of a sudden, that little tune which played through my external speakers when e-mail was received has been replaced by a dull beep on my internal speaker. All other sound (e.g., startup music, playing MP3s) still works. In "settings," that sound is still set up to play when mail is received and on testing it in that settings window, it works. I happen to have made an unusual number of changes within the past day but can't figure out how or why this might have caused the problem: installing an FTP program, installing an update of Quicktime, and installing a program by Ulead that makes my photos into a SVCD.

Doesn't your letter just answer your problem? You've made a lot of software changes over the past few days and any one of them could have changed the file used for your mail.

Well, in a sense... But one reason I posted here was that maybe someone could surmise what these installations could have possibly changed. I've checked and rechecked -- all my settings are correct. I can systematically uninstall the recently installed software, but I'd hoped to avoid that, that's all...
