I have two IDE caddy's for hard drives. i use them all the time on what was my linux server and could hot swap the drives when the OS was loaded -i'd unmount the drive, swap them over and re-mount the new drive. Is there any way to do similar with Windows 2000? whenever i try it the pc crashes. thanks in advance ~Fliggy

it has no problems if you use the hot swap caddies -which i would highly recommend,
as they offer some protection and cooling- but it will crash if you take one out
without shuting down and powereing off the system.

the reason it (usually) works with *nix, is because windows relies on the bios info
where as most *nix kernals, when the bios tells them what hardware is present, says
something along the lines on 'thats nice' and ignoors it.

What a load of nonsense am I reading here...

Windows NT based OS'es support hotswapping right out of the box. Just disable the
diskdrive in the device manager, then uninstall it. Remove the HDD from the rack,
put the other one back in, issue a "detect new Hardware" and off you go.

A little word of caution, though. You really need to have special Hotswap racks
or none at all. The one with a common Centronics connector just won't do. Why is
that, you ask me? Well, it's because the IDE interface demands that you first plug
in power, and then the data cable. For unplugging: first data, then power. If you
don't follow this order, there's a chance of blowing your IDE controller. Normal
HDD racks, just connect everything at once, which is obviously not good.

Oh, and don't worry about the necessary bus reset; your IDE controller should handle
it just fine. And something else: Windows NT based stuff does _not_ rely on bios
stuff for HDD detection/handling.

Gr, SuSEQ
