Question about 'Changing the icon for Internet Shortcuts after Installation of MS Service Pack 6'

Greetings. I'm wondering if anyone may know of a registry tweak by which one can
change the IE icon used for internet shortcuts. (After haplessly installing the
MS Service Pack 6 to "update" my W2K OS, I discovered to my dismay that microsoft
is indeed as insidious as ever in its self-promotion ad nauseum.)
Having run a search on this site, I read article 04-405 on the subject. Although
it is found under the W98 section, it was indicated to be just as applicable to W2K.
However, although I found the appropriate registry keys to modify/remove as this
article suggests, I don't have - as then indicated in the instructions - a Folder
Options under my IE browser's View menu.
As an alternative approach, I have tried to change the icons for HTML and URL filetypes
in the Advanced Mode of the control panel's folder options, but to no avail; although
an icon of my choosing appears in the Advanced dialog box, once OK is clicked it
doesn't in fact replace the IE icon.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Graci.

Ok, I'm not sure which IE icon you mean...if it's the shortcut on your desktop or
what. But if you want to change the one of your desktop, I have done that by going
to C>programme files>Internet Explorer...then find the IEXPLORE.exe file and right
click it. Choose 'Create Shortcut'... That will put a shortcut in that same folder.
Right click that new shortcut and send it to your desktop. Go to the new shortcut
on your desktop and right click it...choose properties, then look for change icon...
Browse to find whatever icon you want to use for it. Delete the old IE icon shortcut
from your desktop.
Hope this was what you were after....
Blessings, Mike

I have XP and ran into the same problem as in 2k. There is no folder options under
view. The suggestion works for the desktop, but how can I also change the icon located
in my start menu? It is the same as the original on my desktop in that the Internet
Properties window is brought up, which includes no way to change IE's icon.
Thanks in advance.
