Question about 'Windows Installer Appears Every Time I Start an Application'

I can not uninstall or remove or do a repair installation on a Windows 2000 PC with Office 2000. I get an error box for Windows Installer and it says that the feature i am trying to use is on the Office 2000 CD. I was unable to locate the original version from the original installation therefore purchased a new copy of Office 2000. But when i put this CD in, it keeps saying it cant find the CD. I can't even apply any Service Packs to Office 2000. This problem has come about after upgrading from Win 98 to 2000. Please help.

Hi there! it seems a bit radical but you should do a back up and do a clean instal from the the new CD you've bought and get your update from the Microsoft site.

I have had the same problem. If you cant find the exact same version of Office 2000 then you have a hard time uninstalling it. This is because the uninstall program is part of the install program. Seems stupid becuase if you could repair it, then you wouldnt need to uninstall it. I found a program called windows install clean up utility, that has worked sometimes, but not always. I have tried to install the new version of Office 2000 with the old on there, tht just messes it up more, then you worry about different users....make a real mess. Make sure your in administrator, and be sure you do everything from the 'add remove programs' module. Sorry, i dont have an answer but maybe provide some confort that someone else is having the same problems.

i allways think its better to fix than to nuke so first off try here

test each step and tell me what fixes..

here is the gist of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175/en-us
(that apply)

try this:
Unregister Windows Installer, and then reregister Windows Installer,
go to dos/run and type:
msiexec /unreg
then:
msiexec /regserver

then try this:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility.shtml

i tried this but couldnt find keys :S
Check if there pending installation/s:
a. Empty "InProgress" Registry Key
Check the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress
and clean any entries that you find.
b. Empty/Rename "PendingFileRenameOperations" Registry Key:
Check the following registry key:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations
and clean any entries that you find.

still dont work...
didnt think it would but it was woth a shot...

ok to nuke installer go here...
http://www.appdeploy.com/faq/detail.asp?id=77

download installer here

I followed the instructions here, and in appdeploy.com and solved the "Preparing
to install" pop-up but some new problem came up, here's what I did,

------------
1) msiexec /unregister

2) Renamed the files manually,

Msi.dll,
Msiexec.exe, and
Msihnd.dll

Most of them are in system32 if I remember right,

3) then I restarted Windows and installed Windows Installer 3.1 (WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86).

Now the pop-up is gone but I'm facing new problems,

When clicking on the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, this error message showed
up,

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/7493/installercleanupmessagema4.jpg

Also, Acrotray failed on startup because msi.dll was not found. ACDSee 8 also failed
to load showing the same error mesage.

Is Windows Installer 3.1 incompatible with some older programs or is something else
causing this?
------------

I downloaded msi.dll and put that in system32 to make the affected progs (Word, ACDSee,
and others I haven't used yet) run again, but *major expletives* the "Preparing To
Install" pop-up started again upon using IE and furthermore, I still can't use the
'Cleanup Utility'
