DdEntry is (I think Java) You may want to look at SUN or Microsoft VM runtime environments.

Thomas, have you had any joy with this as I'm now experiencing the same problem. I've come to the conclusion that its a file that references gdi32.dll as I've restored the original and also re-applied the version that comes with sp3 each time without success. Jon...

Got it sorted, its d3d8thk.dll, on the DirectX 9.0 redistribution, there are two of these files. d3d8thk.dll and d3d8thk.w2k. Replace your current copy of this file with the d3d8thk.w2k version, changing the .w2k to .dll obviously. I suspect 9.0a has the same file format but doesn't properly choose the correct one to use, I can't be sure though as I did the Web Install. If you don't have this file then drop me a line and I'll email it to you. Jon...

To Jon or others on this thread... I'm not particularly computer savvy and was wondering if someone could explain how to put this fix into effect, where I can obtain the correct dlls and where to make the changes...

THANYOU !! In Many hours of trying everything , reinstalling different directx versions, video card drivers, and windows 2000 and researching the net, then flashing the Motherboard bios, nividia tweak utilities startups, service packs and all that other stuff I found the answer here It actually works. Microsoft 'oop's I did it again' make you think you have to upgrade. I have an asus p4s533 motherboard and an msi geforce mx440 graphics card After install of directx 9 restart in safe mode Then delete d3d8thk.dll from the c:/winnt/system32 folder. Then rename the d3d8thk.w2k to d3d8thk.dll Restart. I wish I tried this a week Ago !!

For all those who can't find this file, its in the dxnt.cab from the DirectX distro.
If you can't find it drop me an email and I'll respond with the required file. Make
sure you include your email address, as I've had a couple of emails from this forum
recently requesting the file but with a nonexistant or invalid return address.

The exact error is the same except for the files involved the error is: The procedure entry point GetRawInputDeviceInfoW could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll. Any assistance would be appreciated, I am using DirectX 9.0c & have Windows 2000 Professional up to Service Pack 4 & all the latest updates & Hotfixes. From what I can gather "getrawinputdeviceinfo" is a function that was
introduced in Windows XP and so may not be available under Win2kPro.
(see http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/winui/winui/windowsuserinterface/userinput/rawinput/rawinputreference/rawinputfunctions/getrawinputdeviceinfo.asp)
Looking at the bottom of the page shows a minimum OS of XP.
I'm no developer but, you may benefit from installing (if you havent
already) the "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1". This adds some code
functionality and is used for the development and execution of applications,
although I don't believe it replaces USER32.DLL which is what you're having problems
with.
You can get this from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

or using windows update but be warned, it is faily hefty in size (23 Meg) so
if you havent got broadband it could take some time.

I'd be interested to know if this fixes your issue.

Jon...

Hi Jon, How are you. Thanx for the info & for the help, but I have the .NET Framework 1.1 already installed as I am using Visual Studio.NET to do a MCSD course. I saw what you mean about the USER32.dll having a minimum requirement of WinXP, I am a bit lost as to how my system picked this problem up if all the software I install is Win2000 compatible. I dont know where I need to begin to start to diagnose the problem & subsequently remove & fix the problem. Maybe you might have some other advice. Thanx Luciano

Hi Jon, How are you. I get this message whenever I try to start an application/game that is affected by this & whenever I try to install an application/game that is affected by this. Basically some things that are on my PC that were working before for some reason are not working now. Here is a little history bout my problem. I did a fresh reinstall of Win2000, and started installing some games that I had 2 that worked were Sims 2 & Shrek 2 team action, as well as The War of The Ring. I then tried to install Visual Studio.NET & could not due to the fact that it requires Win2000 Service Pack 3, I then got myself online & dowloaded every Service Pack, Update, Hotfix & Patch that I could get for Win2000. I installed Visual Studio.NET & SQL Server 2000 & was able to use them. I then started playing Icewind Dale & Disciples 2 & did not see any problems with my PC, I have done so for the last month & have not played a 3D game during this time. Last week for some reason I had to see something bout my Sims 2, so I fired it up & bang I got the Entry Point error bout the GDI32.dll. So I started testing other games, I put in Shrek 2 - Team Action & I got the USER32.dll error, so I started panicking. I then tried others & got variations between the GDI32.dll & USER32.dll error. Anyway I found your solution to the GDI32.dll worked fine now as I managed to get The Sims 2 to work, now I am at the USER32.dll problem & am completely stuck. Thanx Luciano

Luciano,
Are you able to run a dxdiag ? If so can you do a "save all" and email me the output.
I'll have a look at the versions and see if I can spot anything.
It may be worth you trying a couple of utilities from http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/utilities.shtml.
I've used a couple myself like filemon and regmon etc. to spot which file/process
is making a call that generates an error.

It sounds like either your SP and HotFix updates or Visual Studio.NET & SQL Server
2000 have overwriten a W2k file with an XP version, but finding the culprit isn't
going to be easy.
As previously the culprit could be DirectX. Does Icewind Dale & Disciples 2 utilise
DX ? If so could the install of overwiten part of your DX install. Try re-installing
DX over the top or updating it to the latest version available (you may have to reaply
the GDI fix though).
I'm out of the country for a week after saturday so if you send the dxdiag output
before then
I'll try and take a look before I go.

One day windows will be easy.....just not in my lifetime...

Hi everybody, I'm running W2k Professionnal too, and have encountered every trouble Luciano just talked about ; I replaced the d3d8thk.dll, still get an error message about user32.dll ; the .Net Framework is already on my computer ;I don't know which file might be corrupted but I'm glad you're here. I don't want to upgrade to XP coz my config is too weak (PIII 450MHz, and so on...) ; I thought 2000 was stable and tight but it obviously sucks as much as each Microsoft system... Thank you if you can help and otherwise thanks anyway.

it from
http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/town/pipexdsl/q/aqyi20/d3d8thk.w2k .

Copy it to your system32 directory and rename as d3d8thk.dll and you should be good
to go.

I've posted the file on my webspace so you can
download it from here.
Copy it to your system32
directory and rename as d3d8thk.dll and you
should be good to go.

N.B. If you're using IE you may get a
"This content might not be displayed properly..."
warning at the of the page.
Click the error and choose "Show restricted content"
and you should then be prompted to save the file.

Let me know how you get on.

For GetRawInputDevice you're more likely to get a
result with XP than reinstalling DirectX.

Having moved away from Win2k a long time ago I've
not experienced the GetRawInputDevice error but
searching microsoft shows this as a procedure call
used in WinXP onwards.

It wouldn't suprise me if the DirectX install is again
installing the wrong version of a specific file.
If you can have a look in the dxnt.cab file which
comes as part of the DirectX install and see if any
files with a .w2k extension exist and if they are
different in size and date etc to those installed on
your system. The .w2k files are the ones that are
supposed to be installed on Win2k but for some
reason this may not always be the case resulting in
errors such as "DbEntry1" and possibly even this one
to.

Just to let everyone know I fixed the GetRawInputDevice issue by reinstalling Direct X 9.0c. To do a reinstall you can't use the web installer as it will just assume everything is installed correctly. Instead you need to use DirectX Redist installer to do the reinstall.

OK, Luciano's last post was like a year ago, but if it is worth it to any of you: If you are having the "GetRawInputDeviceW cannot be found in the dynamic link library user32.dll" problem that didn't seem to get completely resolved, do this: google search a program called "DirectXEradicator"... it is a standalone uninstaller for DirectX... then reinstall directX, but make sure it is a version that is 8.1 or prior... DirectX 9.0 seems to reference this GetRawInputDeviceW, which is a feature only found in Windows XP... thus it would cause you problems on a W2K machine... I wanted to post this because I was having trouble for a few weeks with this and this was one of the topics I looked to for help.

Dear Jon, I took the liberty of downloading your fix, after having had lots of problem when trying to start Quick-time (latest version of course). The error message was similar to all of the others, but slightly shorter. ("dynamic link" omitted). I replaced the two files "d3d8thk.dll" in my computer with your file after renaming it. 100% success! MANY THANKS! Tore

Hi Jon, OK, I have read through 3 years of notes. I downloaded the file and also found it in the file but all the steps have not worked for me. The w2k file stay w2k even though I rename. It did nothing as far as fixing this error message. What next? Thanks Tona

Well I got to thank all in this thread and special thanks to Jon for starting this. I too had the same 2 errors and fixed the first one using this method, rename d3d8thk etc and it fixed that. Hmm si I thought what about doing the same for the second. To cut a long story short. I replaced all the files listed in system32 with the reg dll files ( NOT THE XPG FILES, those belong to xp I think.) with the ones in the dirextx cab dxnt and ran dxdiag,, no more errors.. I hope it lasts and my puter dont puke, hope this helps others. Douglas

I don't mean to bump an old topic, (few months old), but I think I've found a solution
to the GetRaw' problem.

What I did to stop the error from popping up again was to replace dinput8.dll (181760
byte), in the system32 to the DX9 installation dinput8.dll (664576 byte)

Remember the byte sizes.

When I replaced the 1.81kb dinput with the 6.64kb dinput everything worked fine
and peachy.

I hope this works for everyone else.

Peace out.

My error is similar to this, though I think we may have an error on our pc. We reinstalled (but it failed and we went back to the old one) then my sims stopped working. I uninstalled all my games and reinstalled them all except the newest one I have (pets) and did the d3d8thk.dll thing and they started working fine. I later got my brother to install pets and the error message started coming up again, I redid the whole dll/w2k thing but it hasnt gone away, ive tried it several times, any ideas? Or is it something to do with my pc. Thanks.

Hi Jon I'm just writing to confirm your file is still available from your site, May 2007, and it is invaluable!! I had the classic problem today "The procedure entry point DdEntry1 could not be located in the dynamic link library GDI32.dll." and there would have been no way for me to solve it without your file/help and the help found in this thread. Microsoft have the wrong file in their upgrade download of ActiveX; and without your file to replace theirs, there is no solution. Also they have stopped supporting Win2K (which is a great and stable OS) so there's no chance, as far as I know, of getting the file from them now. Again, thanks for all the help from this Thread ...

Had the same error message each time I launched QuickTime player. Found a solution
in a message board that said to install the redistributable version of DirectX 9.0c.
Found some relevant info from microsoft msdn.com at this address: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb219742.aspx

"DirectX Libraries:
In the past, the optional components of the DirectX SDK, including D3DX, were released
as static libraries. However, these are now released as dynamic-like libraries (DLLs)
because of the increased demand for better security practices. DLLs allow servicing
of previously released code. If these components were deployed as static libraries,
there would be no way for Microsoft to address security issues found after release.
As features are added or changed to the optional components, the names of the corresponding
DLLs are also changed to ensure that no regressions are caused to existing games
that are using released components. The DLLs for each component live side by side,
and game developers can choose exactly which DLL version that the game uses by linking
to the corresponding import library."

A DirectX redistributable that contains all the optional components is available
as both a web-based installer and as a downloadable package which can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9226A611-62FE-4F61-ABA1-914185249413&displaylang=en

Hope this helps, it worked for me.

Hey, I know I might be a little late with this problem, given how long ago it has started this forum, but one of my old friends came to me with this problem on his Windows XP machine, only it seems to be a little more on the extreme side compared to most others... When I start the machine, it starts the booting process seemingly ok for about the first 20 seconds, and then it comes up with the same message you guys say ("The Entry Point 'GbiGetBitMapBitsSize' could not be found in teh Dynamic Link Library GDI32.dll." It won't let me start the computer normally, in Safe Mode, nor Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Also, when I try to download the .dll file you guys have posted, it directs me to a website that has been taken down, for it's "an invalid address..." I don't know what he did, nor does he, and any help would be HIGHLY appreciated! -Jonathon
