I have a Vectra xu dual processor pc with 512 meg memory. It is loaded with windows 2000 and the second update. I have 1 ide and 2 scsi drives 1 regular cd and 1 cd burner 1 pcmcia dual port adaptor. My problem is when I replaced the burner and turned the pc back on the windows start up died and said could not load windows bad or missing c:\winnt\system\system32\??? I cant remember the rest. Tried to reload windows with the startup disk and then the error 16 and file \ntkrnlmp.exe could not load. Put the old burner back in and still no response. This pc has been working for months until this change any advice on how to load windows back on. I need the data from the scsi drives???

Have you booted from the Win2k cd and followed the install to the Repair feature? Use Fast Repair and it looks at your entire system

I reread your first message. There is no winnt\system\system32... System32.exe is a backdoor virus. Find a computer to download F-Prot or another anti-virus which can be run from a floppy.

I just read this post (just saw it today)

If you haven't got it fixed yet, here's some things to check:

1) Check CMOS settings. Set to factory and
redo from start if necessary. CMOS battery could
also be weak.

2) Re-seat your RAM.
Low-grade budget RAM, or faulty RAM ?
can cause headaches; more so with two CPUs (timing issues).

Try reading this article from Microsoft's Knowledge base

Clearing BIOS worked for me.
My error code was 16, but same file, ntkernlmp.exe

I made two 2000 boot discs off images before I found this thread. Worked fine.
