When I try to boot my computer I get the message that the machine can't boot because Windows can't find \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.SAV' I've tried the repair process and I've tried Last Know Good several times but to no avail I understand that the registry is probably corrupt. What can I do to correct the situation? Can I upgrade to XP Pro and fix it? Thanks, Greg

Wow, that worked incredibly well. I was reinstalling my Windows 2000 Advanced Server ontop of itself to help repair all system files (I already tried SFC.exe and the Repair options on the CD) when it crashed half-way thru installation. Then upon boot, the error "The file c:...\system.sav is missing or corrupt". To surmise what that link says (incase it is ever removed or changed) is that there is a backup of the original Windows Registry (original as in the time it was first installed) in C:\WINNT\Repair. Also, if an Emergency Repair Diskette was ever created, it would update the files into C:\WINNT\Repair\regback\system. To fix that error, off the Windows 2000 CD, start up the Recovery Console (Like DOS, but more limited and can access NTFS HardDrives). In the Recovery Console, go to C:\WINNT\System32\Config and rename "system." and "system.alt" to "system.old" and "systemalt.old", respectively. Then, copy those two files (system. and system.alt) from C:\WINNT\Repair (or the regback\system if it's there) to C:\WINNT\System32\Config. Then reboot, and all should be good. Oh, altough I'm not positive, I figure this will work on Windows XP as well.

I tried to get into the recovery mode as recommended by typing "r" when windows starts but that is the problem- Windows 2000 stops after it tries to start (at just 2-3 "bars" in the progress bar). It does not help to try starting in the safe mode or any other option. Any thoughts??? Thanks!

hi, I'm having the same problem, or I wouldn't be looking at this! lacklack, in
order to get to recovery mode, you first have to get to and start the "recovery console".
the recovery console option is something that has to be set up when the computer
is functioning normally. after that every time you boot up, you will have the option
of going into win 2k pro mode or into recovery console. the original (hopefully,
you have one) windows 2000 cd is used to boot up the computer and then you can get
into recovery from that point.

can I ask a related/pertinent question, here?
my laptop's 40gb hdd got this error msg. I pulled that drive and put in another w2k
drive. failing drive is fully accessible w/ a little usb powered enclosure. can
i simply get a copy of "system" from a bu location on that original drive and use
that as my copy, or can I similarly hookup my real backup drive and copy the
winnt\system32\config\system (and system.alt) files off of that onto the failing
drive; replacing the "corrupted" files?

all of the above being done without necessity of going into recovery mode, etc...

YESSS!!!

worked like a charm! and I din't even have to use the recovery mode/console. Actually,
I had tried something similar by copying system and system.alt to another folder,
then renaming in config, and then recopying the copies back to config - to get around
possible bad spots on hard drive... this didn't work.

With my "bad" drive hung off a usb port, I was able to go into it and find b/u copies
of "system". there was a whole folder with notheing but those, but I can't remember
the name. got a bu copy from 8/27/07, not too bad. but with the laptop now running
with the original drive in place, when I search for files called "system" as I did
to find the b/u's - those other copies of system no longer are found!!!

what happened! where did they come from? where did they go?! and what did I do
to create them in the first place?!! do they only show up if the drive is not the
primary = boot-up drive?

anyway, just shows if you have an enclosure and another hdd, you can fix a lot of
things with relative ease and no recovery/bootable disc!

Thanks for the summary as the original article is gone. This worked great for me. The first thing I'm doing now is a disk copy! Thanks!!!!

HELP!!! i followed these directions but since it was only asking for system.sav,
i ignored the instructions for the system file. i tried to start the laptop and
then got the message that my system file was corrupted. no problem, i'll just go
back to repair console and take care of it...but when it asks for my admin password
(which was blank) it says password is invalid!!! WTF!???!?!??!
