Question about 'How do I make the background of desktop icon text transparent?'

I have a question about How
do I make the background of desktop icon text transparent?:
How about.. how do you remove icon text from your desktop completely? I only have
a couple of icons on my desktop and I know what they all lead to. I don't need redundant
text to show me what/where they lead to.

The easiest solution I've found is to simply put one space in the text box (ie:
right click on the icon and choose "rename" and hit the space bar once...then enter).
You still have a small spot there under the icon, but with the use of the Transparent
app, you can't see it unless the icon is highlighted.

This is most annoying, as others in this chain, "out of the blue" my Win XP desktop
icons acquired a blue box around the text. None of the suggested remedies helped.
Anybody has a magic cure?

This works:
Go to control panel - double click system
choose advanced tab
Click on settings within the performance box
Make sure 'use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop' is ticked.
If not; tick and click apply, then ok and this should have reverted back,
If not and the box was already ticked, try unticking it, apply, then ok and then
restart the process over again
Another thing to try: right click on the desktop go to arrange icons by and scroll
down to 'lock web items on desktop' this should not be ticked.
Hope this helps

Blarnoosti is one of many suggesting the same fix, unfortunately it doesn't work
for me. The 'use drop shadows' is already checked and the 'lock web items' is unchecked.
I switch them and apply, reset them and apply, no joy.

Hi,
I tried this, but it did not solve the problem for me. What I had to do in my case
was delete a file that I had somehow added to my Active Directory.
I went to Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web.
There I noticed a weird image file. The only one I needed there was "My Current Home
Page". I checked and deleted the weird image file.
Then I went back to Performance Options (as mentioned in this article), rechecked
the "use drop shadows for icon labels on the destop" checkbox, and shazam, my problem
was fixed.
Hope this helps others too.
Regards,
Somaiah.

(1) chose Icon/Shortcut & press F2 (for renaming).
(2) delete Shortcutname.
(3) press/hold the ALT-Key & enter "0160" without ""
(4) Enter.
Just works fine...

Is there any way to cllear the blue highlight under the icons on the desktop and
still have a name under the icon? The solution given deletes the entire name of
the icon.

can't take credit for this but after hours of trying, this finally worked. i am pasting
something i found on another web site. here it is and it works. good luck.
Hi, Right click on desktop. Click down to Properties, then open the Desktop tab.
Click on the Customize Desktop button, then open the Web tab. Delete everything in
the Web Pages box except, My Current Home Page. Press OK, then Apply, and maybe OK
again. Possibly restart for settings to take effect. Should solve the problem. Good
luck, Rob
