Question about 'How do I see my file associations?'

Like many other users out there, I've used the 'Open with..' option without unchecking
'Always use this program to open these files'. This has obviously created a file
association that I'd rather not have.
This normally wouldn't be a problem, as I'd go to the File Types list, find the extension
and delete it (which I've done a number of times). This time, however, the extension
isn't in the File Types window; in fact, it's not even in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT branch
of the registry.
Can anyone tell me where it's gone, or at least how to kill the file association
without uninstalling the offending program?

Associate the file type with another program, releasing
the offender.

I had the same problem. This Microsoft KB article seemed to hold the key to the
solution :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q257592.
I finally found the (unwanted) modified file extension at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\
and deleted it.. Phew!
