I need help.....
I don't know what I have done but my W2K now refuses to boot: just before starting
to display the desktop it reboots, again and again.
Is it something already seen?
I can still run W98 on my computer but all the software is under W2K
Many thanks if you can help

Marc ,,,,,sound like and looks like a virus,,,,start win98 and download SpyBot
from the net ,then put it on a
3 1/2 " disk or you can save it to the winnt folder on your HD, restart your machine
and go in to win2k in the safe mode ( F8 key ), install Spybot on the HD and run
it...then reboot see if it comes up right ..
If still will not boot ,,,reboot with the win2k cd and run the repair ...

Bob,
I thought it could be a worm too, and I am currently running an updated Norton antivirus
under W98.
I cannot start anything in W2K: it reboots the same way in safe mode or in "last
ggod configuration"
I will try to reboot with the W2K CD. I just want to avoid reinstalling all my software
Many thanks and please, let me know if you have other ideas

Marc ,,,,,most the new virus will not hook up with win98 just win2k and newer ,,Norton
will not find them or take them out,,looks like you will need to run the repair to
get back into win2k good luck

repair doesn't work because I cannot boot from the CD. I have to first run W98 and
then launch the W2K CD, which allows me only to do a new install of W2K...
Any possibility to avoid reinstalling all the other software? (I have a recent copy
of the registries but doesn't know what to do with it)
thanks again

Marc ,,,,go into the BIOS setup ( norm. would be the del. key to get into the BIOS
setup just at the post) and change it to boot to the a: drive then to your cd drive
D: and then to your HD C:/> save and exit,,,if you did it right the win2k will load
at startup when it is in the cd drive,,,,,,,,,if you have a usb cd drive you download
a file to load your USB port up just after post...then win2k cd will find it and
start it up

Marc ,,,, here's a link and some text about USB driver
http://www.addonics.com/support/download/usb/USBboot.zip
You will also need to download rawrite2.exe to blow out the img file....
Installing Windows using USB connection
The following procedures have been tested to work successfully with various Notebook
and Desktop computers by our engineers. Because of the growing complexity of new
computer hardware and software, there is always possibility that the USB DOS driver
and the installation procedures that we provide cannot enable you to install the
Windows OS onto your system. In this case, you may need to check with your hardware
manufacturers to determine the problem. Addonics cannot provide any technical support
beyond our own products as our technical staffs have no knowledge of the computer
hardware and software that you have. Often time, there might be existing hardware
problems or damaged installation CDs that prevent the proper installation of the
Windows OS. Please note that the current USB DOS driver can only support USB 1.1
speed.
As always, you should make a back up copy of all your important data before reinstalling
the Windows OS. Addonics is not liable for data loss, time loss or claim of system
damage resulted from the instructions outlined below. We welcome any valuable inputs
you can provide us so we can continue to improve our services and products. Please
email all your comments to atc@addonics.com or any technical related questions to
techinfo@addonics.com.
* Make sure you have enough space in your local hard drive. At least 4Gb or higher.
The USB cable is an Addonics USB 2.0 interface cable.
The process involved
A. Set up the USB drives under DOS mode (step 1 - 9)
B. Copy folders and files from your Windows installation CD to the hard drives (step
10 - 17)
C. start the software installation
Installing Windows 2000, XP, 98SE or Me using the Addonics USB CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD/CDRW
or DVD-R/RW drive.
Download USB DOS driver and Save the file to your hard drive.
Use Winzip to extract the file, if you do not have the Winzip program you may get
a shareware version here www.winzip.com
Once Winzip is installed, use the program to extract the file.
Open the folder name USBboot and execute the rawrite2.exe
When prompt for the image name, enter dosboot.img
Enter the floppy drive as your destination drive, which in general is the A:\
Place a disk into the floppy drive and press enter
When it is done, reboot with this disk to use the USB devices.
CDROM drives will be using the Drive R:\
Hard Drives will be using the next letter available. Please note there will be no
letter for the hard drive if it has not been partitioned and formatted. If you are
not familiar with partitioning or formating a hard drive, please go to the following
Microsoft link for the information http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q255867
If everything went well, you should have a drive R:\ for the CDROM drive. You are
now ready to copy the I386 folder from the Windows 2000 or XP installation CD to
the hard drive.
At the prompt, go to the C:\drive by typing “C:" then "Enter”
At the Local Drive C:\drive, create a Folder name. For example at the C:\prompt type
“MD 2k”. Doing this will create a folder name “2K” on your
local hard drive.
Now type “R": then "Enter” to go to the R:\drive
At the R:\ prompt type the following “Path=A:" then press "Enter
Now type “Xcopy . /s C:\2k" then press "Enter” (There is a space between
Xcopy and the dot)
Once the copy process is completed, go to the C:\drive.
Open the folder you have created, in this case it is the 2k folder. For example:
from the C:\ prompt type “CD 2k" then press "Enter”
Now go to the I386 folder by typing CD I386 then Enter, from the C:\I386 type Winnt
and enter.
Installation should now start. Follow instruction from your Operating System manual
on how to install the OS. (Installation will take some time, Please be patient)
Installing Windows 98SE or Me using the Addonics USB CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD/CDRW or
DVD-R/RW drive.
The procedures are practically identical to Windows 2000 or XP as described above.
Except instead of copying the I386 folder to the hard drive, you will copy the Windows
98SE folder or the Windows Me folder to the hard drive.
First, follow step 1 through 10 above. Make sure you have enough space in your local
hard drive. At least 2Gb or higher.
If everything went well, you should have a drive R:\ for the CDROM drive.
At the prompt, go to the C:\drive by typing “C: then enter”
At the Local Drive C:\drive, create a Folder name. For example at the C:\prompt type
“MD 98” doing this will create a folder name “98” on your
local hard drive.
Now type “R: then enter” to go to the R:\drive
At the R:\prompt type the following “Path=A:" then press enter
Now type “Xcopy . /s C:\98" then press "Enter” (There is a space between
Xcopy and the dot)
Once the copy process is completed, go to the C:\drive. Open the folder you have
created, in this case it is the 98 folder. For example: from the C:\prompt type “CD
98" then press "Enter”
Now go to the 98 folder type "CD win98" then "Enter", from the C:\win98 type "Setup"
and "enter".
Installation should now start. Follow instruction from your Operating System manual
on how to install the OS. (Installation will take some time, Please be patient)
Destination drive - using USB floppy or other equivalent of removable storage device.
If your system does not have a built-in floppy drive, you may use a USB floppy, ZIP
drive, CD or USB hard drive. But your system BIOS must have support for booting from
USB floppy, ZIP, CD-ROM or hard drive. Make sure the media that you use to boot the
system contains all the files from the dosboot.img in step 5.

Marc ,,,,just format the floppy ( 1.4mb ) b/4 you try to write to it you should not
need to know how many sectors are on the disk format will set the disk up for you...
besure to tell rawrite2 where the ing file is and what drive to use .....(rawrite2
c:\>temp1\dosboot.img a:)
cd drivers are in the img file if it's a standard cdrw drive

Bob,
I'm so sorry, but it really doesn't work: always the same msg about sectors whatever
I try (reformatted, tried another path)
And problems are accumulating
My DVD rom has a pcmcia. It doesn't boot either. Any chance to change that? When
I start the computer it starts reading before launching WWindows but that's all.
Maybe another question: could I just open the laptop, take the harddrive out, install
it in another (different) laptop and boot a windows CD? Any risk that it wouldn't
work or worse damage the second laptop?
Thank you for your patience
Marc

Marc ,,,your right it will not work because it's for a USB port not for a pcmcia
cd rom....need to read the text file that came with it...
"in another (different) " I would not because it's laptop take in to a desktop and
try it ...
Unplug the one that's in the desktop and plug the laptop HD in.....
Then boot with the win2k cd and let in format the drive.
DON'T install win2k just format the HD...
Or you can download a bootdisk for win98se and format the drive,,,from bootdisk.com
You says what's with all the format stuff...???
If you install win2k on the laptop drive in the desktop pc it will use the hardware
in the desktop and not the laptop,,,,,and you don't have a way to fix it on the laptop
with out a cd drive....(to run the repair item to find the hardware on the laptop...)
So anyway after you have formated the drive go to the win2k cd and copy the I-386
dir to the drive..
it will be on the cd under winnt/I-386.
copy to the laptop HD i.e. C:\>I-386setupNT
Then put it back in the laptop and restart the laptop with the win98se boot disk,,,then
go to
C:\>I-386setupNT dir and type winnt.exe in it will install and set it up to run
on the laptop.......
I know it looks hard but it's not, just takes time....with a out boot cd rom drive...

That's seems reasonable. Many thanks Bob
Can I ask another one: someone suggested that I could boot from the floppy (it works)
and then launch the install from the CD. How about the second part? Would it work?
If yes, how would I install the driver for the CD player?
