Protect folders/files from other users

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to protect my folders and files from other users who log onto
my computer? I suspect that one of my roommates is peering into my folder inside
of Documents and Settings. Can I restrict the access of my user account folder in
there?

Joe
Ask your Admin. to set it up for you or ask him/she to let your install a program
that will let you put a pass word for your folders and files...
You can check out the programs you can get to do this at download.com...
hope this helps

Well, it is my computer, I share it with my 2 roommates. Do you have any particular
program in mind? Cause I went to that site and didn't really see anything that looked
like what you described. It's really important that I block the whole folder, I'd
hate to go and try to password protect tons of files, one at a time. And the other
roommate says he is doing it everytime he logs on.

Joe,
In order to set permissions on your folders and files, you need to have an NTFS formatted
disk, rather than a FAT32 disk (right click on the disk in My Computer and select
'Properties' to see what you have).
There is a program in Win2k to convert from a Win32 filesystem to NTFS, but no way
of going back without using commercial software
Once you have NTFS in place, you must ensure that the other users on the system are
not part of the 'Administrators' group, otherwise they can reset the permissions
you have set to lock them out of your personal files
To look further into this, try Googling on 'NTFS permissions'

Thanks for the reply. I wish I could use NTFS but I have some (and the other roommate)
older programs that won't work with it. I've found a third party program but haven't
been able to set it up yet.

You might want to look at this sites solution to your problem: "find.pcworld.com/38702".
This is a stand alone utility for the NTFS/FAT32 file system to cure your ills.
