After a recent MS security update, my computer will no longer hibernate if I set
the start time longer than 5 minutes. I have contacted two other users with a similar
problem in another forum, but as yet, no one seems have a work around. Any help?

Do you have Desk PC or a Laptop ???
hibernate is made for Laptops to save the Battery not for Desktop PC's,,,,,,you can
turn off the screen and the HD ....if that helps but most don't use much power anyway....and
you have 110 volts all the time into the system..

Dex,
The machine is a desktop. But using hibernate is nice since all the system fans shut
off and it is basically like having the machine powered down. Note - you can even
cut the power to the machine and it will resume and boot quickly. Having to set the
time interval to 5 minutes or less is a pain since if you stop working for a few
minutes, the machine shuts off. If I use the monitor and hard drive options, the
monitor only partially powers down and the system fans still keep running. So I would
prefer hibernate. Just irks me that there seems to be no tool to diagnose this problem.
I have not been able to find any messages in any of the log files or event viewer
that points to what might be wrong.

Hey, Marc!
I have the same problem already for about 2 weeks. But I ran no security updates
in this time. It spimly stopped working! I've set a time of 15 minutes of idle time
before
hibernating, but never tried to change it to 5 before. Sorry, but I am also unable
to tell you a solution for it.

Zoli,
I have traced the problem to update 835732. If I uninstall this update, hibernate
works fine. This has occurred both on my laptop and on a desktop machine. So it does
not appear to be machine or bios dependant. You might let me know if you have this
update installed. I think at this point I will wait for the next service pack and
hope that this fixes it.

Hi, Marc.
Yes, I have this update installed, and I already know about that it is buggy, as
I already mentioned
in my posts before. I dont want to uninstall it. I would appretiate a script or another
solution to work around this bug. Do you know about any solution except uninstalling
the update?

Zoli,
Unfortunately, I know of no way to fix this. I believe that one of the udated files
(of which there are many) has some sort of interaction with the timing needed to
activate the hibernation (or standby as well). I have tried to see which processes
are associated with the power management features to see if replacing one or more
of the old files would fix this. But I have not been able to do this. I would need
some sort of software guide to see if a 'dll' file or other system file would be
responsible. If I make any progress, I'll let you know.

Folks:
It seems to have been more than a month since the last mention of the Win2K hibernation
problem. This problem is getting more and more annoying, and I wondered if anyone
has heard of a possible "workaround" short of uninstalling the security patch?
Thanks,
Wayne

I have not heard of any fixes as of yet, but so far I have had 3 desktops and 1 laptop
suffer from this problem. The only work around is to not install the security patches.
This problem does not seem to exist in WinXP.

Good News! The latest set of Win2K "security" patches seems to have fixed the 'suspend'
problem. I've set 'suspend' times of 10 minutes and 30 minutes, and both work correctly.
