Question about 'How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

I have a question about How
do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?: This seems to be
the most appropiate place to post my question. My problem isn't exactly a program
running itself during startup, it's actually the installation wizards for 2 programs
that interrupt my startup process. Regardless of whether or not I've installed these
2 programs (whether they exist in my system already or not) their wizards just keep
on asking me to install their programs every single time I log on. The worst thing
is that the programs wanting to be installed are Ad-aware & Pop-Up Stoppers. Many
people have recommended I actually SCAN through the Ad-aware program and delete any
files that may be causing the problems, but nothing at all seems to be working.
Any advice? :(

Remove both programs through Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. Then go to Windows
Explorer and remove the program folders if they still exist. Then run a Registry
Cleaner such as Winner Tweak Registry Cleaner. Then reinstall AdAware and see
if a boot works without your current problem. Then install the other program (which
I think is the problem as AdAware is pretty benign) and see how it goes. Work from
there.

Sorry, I should have said I had done this already. I've gone into add/remove and
deleted these both. I've intalled them again/removed them again a few times after
that first time. I've gone back through and deleted all files relating to the programs,
rebooted and still their wizards ask me to install. I've been warned that I should
be careful with my registry, however if it's just a registry clean (something I can
do without volunteerily deleting items) then would you mind if I got a link from
you to that cleaner? I've been given Ad-aware Personal 6 (on disk) by a friend,
so after I do that I could reinstall the disk copy of Ad-aware to run another scan.
I've run off about 8 scans since this whole thing started, but I'm really willing
to try anything.

Download msconfig.exe (for Windows XP, Microsoft omitted to put it in Win2k). When
you run it, it will display a list of the programs that run at startup. Disable any
that you don't want.

This is the message I get when I run msconfig.exe
"Cannot find the file 'msconfig.exe' (or one of it's components). Make sure the
path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available".
Am I doing something wrong?

Step 1: download msconfig.exe for Windows XP (or a zip file containing it).
Step 2: place msconfig.exe in the folder X:\WINNT\system32\ (where X: is the system
drive where you have Win2k installed)
Step 3: click Start -> Run -> msconfig
Step 4: click startup tab, uncheck the boxes next to the programs you don't want
(be careful not to stop something required by the system), click ok
Step 5: reboot. After the system comes back, a message will appear "informing" you
of what you just did. Check the box not to have this message in the future, click
ok.

Hi Adrian. Thank you for your reply. I only have one problem: I still only have
Windows 2000, therefore am unable to run msconfig. I feel like I'm getting somewhere
though, what should I do in this instance?

already ahead of you! Given your advice, I went on to search the web for ways of
running msconfig on 2000. I came upon this site
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html
after many different attempts to download msconfig programmes for 2000. This was
the only one that worked. I downloaded it, deselected the 2 "annoying" programmes
... and ... voilah! They've gone!
Thank you to EVERYONE who has helped me try and sort this out ... the 'annoyance'
has now gone and I am happy once again.
Thanks again, you've been wonderful. :D
