Customer Installed WRONG CD (win 2000) thus killing windows xp

My customer CLAIMS he installed grabbed the wrong CD and managed to install Windows
2000 - thus wiping out Windows XP. There are no traces of Windows XP that I can find
on this computer. How do I verify his story? On booting up, the menu says there is
only ONE operating system W2K. Now, I can read the activation key (using Jellybean)
- but can you tell by the key if this was originally a Windows XP O/S ? please respond
to tutor @ cfl . rr . com

Nope,,,,If he formated the drive 1st maybe...was is the format (fat32 or ntfs )
one HD with C: only ,right ?
they is one file that will give it away it's called msconfig.exe it will not come
with win2k but it comes with XP as a default item...if it's on the machine check
the date .
also the files dates, if they are 12-7-99 (system file dates) it's win2k unless
the SP4 was installed,,
But you said you can read the activation key for XP on this machine ???? or do you
mean the CD ID #
in the reg file ?
win2k will not use activation key from MS
what is the 1st 3 numbers and the last 2 numbers (letters)

This customer of yours is looking for a free upgrade install procedure or the equivalent
somehow. Try it yourself on a trade-in PC. W2K has the same routines in it to make
it avoid a backwards install over a newer version, same as all the MS Windows products
have had, at least as far back as Win98.
If anyone NEEDS to go backwards, the newer OS has to be totally removed by reformatting
the primary DOS partition.

Your Customer is either blind, cant read or he is pulling the "I Made A Mistake But
You Are Going To Pay For It"Routine on you.He had plenty opportunities to realize
his Mistake before the O/S got installed. That was a blatant Screw-Up on his part, don't
see why he wants to hold you liable.

WHO SAID I WAS Liable? Let's not go around shooting first and asking questions later!
(Is that a "shot" at Amercians?) No, No... All I want to do is find out ... is there
a way to PROVE his assertion? ie: can you tell by the Registration Key (using jellybean)
if the key is really for Win XP? Of course, I would need a full and legal Win XP
to do a re-install, but if he finds a valid registration key (doubtful if this is
an OEM install)......
Let me know if you can come up with a more helpful suggestion, eh? (insert grin)

When you say customer, do you mean he purchased the system from you? If so, would
you not have a record of what he purchased including the OS on the machine? If,
however you only provide support on a machine he purchased somewhere else, I believe
you may not be able to prove what you are looking to prove.

To start with Jellybean will only read the reg. file to get the CD key number not
the activation key , and if win2k is the only OS on the machine that's what you will
see..
activation key is encry. code...from MS...when you activation it's software....
send me the numbers and I will tell you what you are looking at and if it's XP cd
number I will know...
sound like you or he is rolling funny stuff....and taking a hit or two...

I'm a newbie, I have XP,but no Excel program.A friend gave me Win2K office to download
(to get Excel) After the down load everything seemed fine. In the process of exploring
a power point disk and alternating between the 2K disk and power point disk, my
d-drive quit working, Every other program seems fine. Did I just fry my d-drive?
It wont spin any disk.

I doubt you "fried" your cd-rom drive by swapping discs. Was there any other problem?
Are you able to put a disc in and open it from My Computer?
Also, this discussion was mainly about a guy trying to figure out if a customer was
trying to cheat him and get a free copy of Windows, but I would be glad to help
you.

you can't grab a win2k cd and use an xpkey to install.
won't work. the key uses a different hash.
