Question about 'What to Throw Away'
Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 7:19 am Posted by Jerry Frank

I have a question about 2 files in my Documents and Settings/Local Settings/Temp
folder. They are shown in the form ~WRF3230.tmp . If I try to right or left single
click on either, my computer locks up (actually goes into never ending debug mode).
That means I am unable to select them to delete or even to determine properties.
However, the 2 consume (by process of elimination of other files) almost 1.5 gb.
What are these files and how can I get rid of them?
Thanks.

Jerry
I'm not sure also,BUT reboot into safemode and check on them...properties/Ver./Date/maker/
If you are not sure at that point rename them
i.e. ~WRF3230.tmp to ~WRF3230.tm_
and then reboot and see if you have a new like them..
If so run the program down that's making the file.
By date or maker...
If not go back into safemode and remove them..
Most tmp files can be removed but some may be used by windows or other programs .
-----------------------------------------------
The key is ,,when you reboot to check on a new file like them...and if you have one
then uninstall the program that's making the file....

Get Process
Explorer from Sysinternals and run it. Pull down Search ---> Find. Type
in ".tmp" in the "Handle or type substring" box. It will show you which process
is using that file.
Later,
JT

Still a problem; Was re: Question about 'What to Throw Away'

Thanks to both of you for your advice. I downloaded the program. It indicates that
the 2 files in questions are not being used.
I booted in safe mode. When I clicked on one of the files, the same thing happened
as in normal mode. The computer locked up. However, this time, when I clicked ctrl-alt-del
and end Temp, it restored me to the desk top. In normal mode, everything shut down.
Any other suggestions for getting rid of these files would be appreciated.
Thanks again.

Your system is NTFS
And that's to bad if it was fat32 it would be duck soup to remove the files...
But you can use the Recovery Console to remove them but you will need to read a bit
to learn how to use it...,see help in win2k on Recovery Console commands,,you will
need to use the SET command so you can get to the files......plus you need to be
the Admin. to do it...
You can also use a program called ERD Commander but it's not free and it's not cheap.
You can also install the Recovery Console from inside of win2k, so when you boot
up you will see it listed as a item you can boot up to...(Menu item)
It will take some work but you can do it..
You will need your win2k cd so have it on hand...
Good Luck...and give it hell.
NOTE****If you don't want to install it,,
Just reboot your machine and hit the F10 key at boot and select Recovery Console
,but it's best to install it.
-------------------------------------------------------
Just one of the commands in RC
Delete (Del)
Deletes a single file. The delete or del command with the parameters listed below
is only available when you are using the Windows 2000 Recovery Console, which can
be started from the Windows 2000 Setup program. The delete or del command with different
parameters is available from the command prompt in Windows 2000.
delete [drive:][path] filename
-or-
del [drive:][path] filename
Parameters
[drive:][path] filename
Specifies the location and name of the file you want to delete.
Note
Delete only operates within the system directories of the current Windows installation,
removable media, the root directory of any hard disk partition, or the local installation
sources.
