Something else that slows down system bootup

Spybot S&D is a WONDERFUL program, but if you are running the HOSTS file that it
uses to check certain ads and spyware against an internal list of baddies, for some
reason it can make your start-up take forever. It doesn't do this to everyone.
On other computers it can make dialup internet access take minutes to connect. (This
is from personal experience with computers at home and at work... I'm not an expert.)

Well it's not SpyBot that's holding it back..
SpyBot is just a remover and it's not a TSR (it only runs when you ask it to) it's
true that it has Immunizer with it but it will not go into play until you get on
the net and are loading items up to view..
More like a Firewall that's holding your machine back at dialup internet access.
or the reg file slowing down your boot up..and internet access............
Try this...see below, also check your setting on your firewall
-----------------------------------------------------
RegCompact
Consolidate the Registry fragments left from installing and uninstalling programs.
Fragmented space slows down your computer; this utility corrects the problem by writing
the data in the Registry out into a temporary file. The data is written sequentially,
so no holes from deleted data or fragmentation are retained. The utility then reboots
the computer, and the compacted Registry information is replaced when the system
starts up.

hope this helps τΏτ

Hi, Dex. (Any chance you're the Dex I know from... let's say ANOTHER forum? The
one who designed the spherical house?) Thanks for the help.
You should know that I had the identical problem on four computers. Two were behind
two different firewalls (my work and someone else's work), and two were at different
locations but not behind firewalls (my home and another person's home, both dialup
but using different ISPs). In each case I had activated the Hosts file in Spybot,
and deactivated it when I found that startup and/or dialup was very slow (which worked).
If it's just a coincidence, it's an odd one. Of course, since I had set up some programs
on all four computers, the problem might possibly be due to some system settings
or conflicts. It took a long time and some digging before I had the idea that the
Hosts file might be part of the problem, though.
