I have a question about I
get a 'File not found' message when I try to start any program:

I've read all the responses in this section and have tried the fixes. But I'm still stuck. 3 Monday's back, I got a virus which was very similar to vbs.gaggle.E. With the help of McAfee's Stinger, Symantec's Knowledge Base and BitDefender's home version, I've fixed most of the impacts from this virus. But I am left with 2 problems: 1) Some .exe files will not start. Using Explorer to start them directly or using the Start menu, I get an error, where path2exe is the full path to the executible (eg. d:\lib\games\checkers.exe): Cannot find path2exe. Windows needs this file to run path2exe. Or, for an associated file (like .xls for Excel), the message changes slightly as follows, where path2doc is the full path to the associated file: Cannot find path2exe. Windows needs this file to run path2doc. 2) Cannot browse shares on the network. I can see the other computer's listed, but cannot drill down any further. I get an error, where machine_name is the other computer's name: \\machine_name is not accessible. The network path was not found. From the other machine, I can browse back to the server as normal. I cannot ping in both directions. I'm hoping solving 1) will also fix 2). So if you have any additional ideas on what could be causing these problems, I would be very pleased to hear them. Thanks in advance. Les PS. This is a really cool site. I'm glad I found it (even if I don't get an answer).

Les
Sounds like the virus is still on the machine and running in the backround.
The file name path2exe is not a win2k file.

Consolidate the Registry fragments left from installing and uninstalling programs.
Fragmented space slows

are retained. The utility

then reboots the computer, and the compacted Registry information is replaced when
the system starts up.

ok, I solved part of the problem. It finally dawned on me that the programs that
I could not launch all had one thing in common -- they were 16-bit applications.
With help from the Microsoft site, I pin-pointed the problem to "ntvdm.exe". It
was missing!

As part of the clean-up from the virus, it must have been deleted.

After I restored this file from a good backup, the problem was fixed. Yeah! (I
came really close to a complete re-install. So I was very glad to eventually figure
it out.)

This whole experience has been a big eye-opener. It really is amazing how vulnerable
Windows is.

Les
