Since I installed Windows Media Player and Real Player, I have not been able to get my Win2kPro to play .wav files without starting up one of the two programs. I have removed the file associations from the programs, but I cannot get the system to play the files when I click on them. Originally, the system played them directly.

In order for win2k to play a .wav file "automatically" it must have a program associated
with it. When win2k is installed, the default associated program is Windows Media
Player.
You probably had an older version that looked differently from the new one you installed.
If you have a favorite media player, use that one; if not, use WMP, maybe with a
different view (or skin).

How does the "Sound and Media" system play them? I don't want to have to close the program every time I click one. "The Sound and Media" system plays the .wav and passes on. I shouldn't have to put away media player everytime a sound plays.

"Sounds and Multimedia" (mmsys.cpl) is a specialized tool, part of the system configuration
tools in Control Panel. Behind the scenes it uses the mechanism as windows media
player. When you use it, you still need some mouse clicks.
There a lots of Players out there, and many of them better than WMP. Do a google
serach, and you may find something you like.
