Error loading OS...

First of all, thanks in advance to all that can help me.
Here's my problem with my desktop. I usually don't turn the computer off and just
put it in sleep mode until I have to use it again. So far, I've never had a problem
when doing this. Recently I did turn the entire computer off because we took a trip
out of state. Now I go to turn the computer back on, and all I get is a black screen
with a message "error loading OS." I had all the updated antivirus definitions, and
two good firewalls on this computer so I'm kinda lost as to what the problem could
be or how to fix it. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Running two firewalls maybe the error..
Reboot into safemode (F8 at will get you into safemode)
And turn off the two firewalls so they DON't load at boot
and then give it a try...
When you get back in turn one on and then try it.
I wish you Happy New Year :>)

I tried booting in safe mode and I can't get past the black screen. One of the firewalls
was included in my wireless router, so I can't turn that one off unless I unplug
it, but even still, this was never a problem before.
Thanks for the reply!!

If you can't get by the black screen via. the safemode you have a hardware error
or a software error and windows can't get around it at boot.
The norm would be hardware error..making a bad call to a ram address.= black screen
(BSOD)
Unplug or remove the last item you put in i.e. USB item or pci card or router.
If you can't get it to boot by removing a item reboot with the win2k cd and run the
repair item under the SETUP item..
It will rework the reg file and put down new OS files so you can logon to win2k..

Thanks a lot DEX. I'll see if that works, but now I can't find my W2K discs. I even
made a back up copy for situations like this and now I can't find either of them.
I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks again!

Just found a new error message. When I put in my W2K disc and try to repair it, I
get a message that reads "Error I/O Status: 00000A00." Got a friend that thinks this
is a HDD problem rather than a virus or corrupt version of Windows. If that's the
case, does anyone know of a way to boot by getting around this or repairing it without
losing my files?

Am workng through a similar probelm on a W2K box. The primary C:\ partition of 15gb
has failed but the other two partitions are in good order. Here's what's been tried
so far;
FDISK /MBR = The command executed but failed to effect the problem.
Ran Easy Recovery on the partition and it indicated there was no physical problem
with the hardware.
Partition Magic 8 (from Floppy) gave an Error #91 followed by an Error #87. Attempting
the same load from a boot CD gave the same results.
Windows Resuce Boot Floppy failed with a less than memorable message.
Windows repair utility from the OS CD failed to find the drive. Repair Console commands
are being reserched to see determine repair options.
Am now moving files off of the two other (good)partitions on the drive before proceeding
with the repairs.
Most of the repair tools used can be found at http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ or hirensbootcd.
Once file retreival has been achieved, the drive will be reimaged from a drive image
made a little over a month ago. And would have been do it i had made a copy of one
directory there is no copy of and the user profile.
Hope this helps somebody out.
Best Advice: Make drive images often and use a live backup application like Datakeeper.
I didn't and so far its cost me 8 hours.

Actually, my solution was stupidly easy. I took my HDD out and basically gave it
a good knock on the center with my knuckle, and it started up perfectly. Now I'm
keeping it in hibernation mode, and haven't had any problems since. I'll probably
still look into buying another HDD just to make sure I have a useable one. I'd hate
to reformat my secondary drive and lose all that info.

Sounds like your drive problem might have been stuck read/write head. I don't have
a HW problem, and after running FIXBOOT from Console and got it to the point it says
the BOOT.INI can't be read and then the \system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.
Onward . . . to data . . . hopefully ;>
