Excel linked workbook text string chopped off

In my workbook I do a vlookup on a table in an external workbook to return a large
text string. When the externally linked workbook is closed the function returns
only the first 255 characters of the string. When the externally linked workbook
is open I get the whole thing.
I need for the linked workbook to stay closed because many people will use the workbook
that is using it. Is there a workaround?
