windows 2000 password problem

When turning on the computer, the password screen comes up and the users have always hit "cancel", then windows loads up. From there they can put in their own usernames and passwords. Now for some ?$#% reason, Windows 2000 is asking for a password before looading windows and cancel is grayed out. The person who set up this computer is gone and no one knows the password. What is the work around and why after all this time , the cancel button is grayed out? Thanks

You may need to run a password recovery program, there are a few options available if you Google for them.

What do you mean by "the password screen comes up and the users have always hit "cancel", then windows loads up."? Is this a password before Windows loads?

The cancel button trick only worked on 9x. You can not cancel around the 2k logon screen.

Clean Install XP

By before windows loads up, I mean, the computer is turned on and before the "desktop" comes up, tje computer asks for a password. They have been using this computer for a year now and never have had to put in a password at this point.
