windows 2000 / ibm thinkpad key mapping problem

At some point during installing the updates from Microsoft's web site to update my
windows 2000 installation, the key mapping for my IBM thinkpad seems to have gotten
messed up. The right side of the keyboard is now mostly wrong (typing a j gets a
1, etc.)
If I plug in an external keyboard (either USB or otherwise) the external keyboard
works fine. The thinkpad's keys also *DO* map correctly prior to windows being fully
started up, like at the startup password prompt, the thinkpad's keys work fine, a
"j" is still a "j", but after it's done booting up, it's all messed up.
It was during a recent re-imaging that I noticed that it was something in the windows
update files that was doing this, as the keyboard worked fine after a fresh windows
2000 install. But, not after installing the windows updates. I've been searching
the web, including this site for about a year hoping to find someone else who'd seen
this, and better yet, had a solution.
Anyone have any ideas?

Try this
Control Panel/System icon/Hardware/Device Mrg./click on the keyboard item,right click,select
uninstall then reboot
win2k on reboot should find the keyboard again and reinstall the drivers for it...(Found
New Hardware and will now install drivers for it)
You can also reinstall the keyboard driver.
in the c:\winnt\inf folder (hidden folder) right click on the keyboard.inf file
and select install..

Hmm... a good suggestion/thought, but neither worked. There were three keyboard items
installed and I removed all of them and rebooted. It did reinstall, but I'm right
back where I was. (I'd first tried the right-click on the .inf file and choosing
"install" but that didn't work either.)

The windows update can do many funny things to many machines...
Also do you have the IBM driver disk for your machine.?
It should have a proprietary keyboard driver on it.
----------------------
also Try this below
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Try this it may work for you
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Windows 2000-based computer stops responding, you cannot log on to Windows,
OR your CPU usage for the System process approaches 100 percent
WORKAROUND
Disable the IPSec Policy Agent service from Safe Mode or from the Recovery Console.
or see the link for SC below
****Note ****This problem may occur if other drivers or services do not load successfully.
To disable the IPSec Policy Agent service from Safe Mode
Restart your computer.
When you receive the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press
F8.Select safemode, press ENTER, and then press ENTER at the operating system selection
page.
Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc /s, and then click OK.
In the Computer Management console, expand Services and Applications, click Services,
and then double-click IPSec Policy Agent.
Click Services, and then, on the General tab, click Disabled as the Startup type.
Click OK, and then restart your computer.
To disable the IPSec Policy Agent service from Recovery Console
Either insert the Windows 2000 startup disk in the floppy disk drive, or insert the
Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive or the DVD-ROM drive, and then restart the
computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM
drive or the DVD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
At the Setup screen, press R to repair the installation, and then press C to start
Recovery Console.
If you have a dual-boot or a multiple-boot computer, select the installation that
you want to access from the Recovery Console.
Type the administrator password.
If the administrator password is blank, press ENTER.
At the command prompt, type disable policyagent to disable the IPSec Policy Agent
service.
To exit the Recovery Console, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
Restart your computer.
---------------------------------------------------------
CAUSE
The security update that is described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-011 contains
an issue that causes Microsoft Windows 2000 to try repeatedly to load
drivers that do not load successfully. Microsoft has confirmed that this problem
occurs if any one of the following drivers is installed:
Ipsecw2k.sys
Imcide.sys
Dlttape.sys
For example, IPSec Policy Agent is set to Manual or Automatic for the startup type
---------------------------
Download Service Controller
From:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4313.html
Service Controller XP is a handy interface that allows you to control your Windows
(NT/2000/XP) services. You can instantly see which ones are running and view detailed
information about all the standard Windows services. In addition, the program provides
information that lets you decide whether to enable or disable a service. It prevents
you from accidentally disabling critical operating system services and suggest whether
to disable a service or not based on the use of your computer (e.g. Default, Gaming,
Internet Gateway etc.)
Also check on this web page for items that are running. or set to run
