Apps not starting in command box

Whenever I open a command box and type in a command (e.g. ping, attrib, ipconfig) I get an error message: "The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000142)" The built-in commands, such as DIR, work fine. I can't find anything on Microsoft's support site that sounds remotely like this problem, nor anywhere else on the net, so if anyone can help I'd be delighted. Perry

Perrorist
Try this
You must first check to see if this error is actaully caused by the service.

Click on Start | Run and then type in "cmd" to open a Command Prompt.
Type in "krbcc32s.exe".
You should see this message "An error occured while starting/running the server (1747)"
If you see this message you must install Client for Microsoft Networks

Click Start | Settings | Control Panel
Double-Click on Network and Dial-up Connections
Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties
Click on Install...
Click Client then Add...
Select Client for Microsoft Networks
Click OK then Close

I'm running Win2K client. I don't have krbcc32s.exe on the machine, but I do have Client for Microsoft Networks installed. I checked a similar machine and it's configured the same but the apps work fine.

On one of the links you gave, I discovered that I had misquoted the error code. It should have been 0xc0000142 and this apparently is related to the loading of DLLs (wrong version or not yet initialised). Now all I need to know is which DLL that relates to. Thanks, DEX, for your help so far. Perry
