2000 reformat problem
Saturday, May 14, 2005 at 7:17 pm Posted by Tracy H
(13 messages posted)
I'm trying to reinstall 2000 pro but can't seem to boot from the cd. I went into
Setup and set the Boot Sequence to start from the CD-rom, put the cd in and restarted.
Now I get a message saying "strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility." If
I hit F1, the same message repeats. If I hit F2, I'm back in Setup.
Can anyone advise me how to proceed here? I'd really appreciate the help.

Hit the F2, it will popup the SETUP for the BIOS.
-------------------------
Once your in the BIOS setup change the boot order to
CDROM:,C:,A:
Then put your win2k cd in the rom drive.
Then Save and Exit the BIOS setup.
When the machines reboots win2k loads up and you will see the windows menu.

Hi Bob,
Thank you very much for the reply. I'm going crazy here, especially since I did
this before a long time ago and didn't have any problem whatsoever.
When I go to Boot Sequence in Bios, I get:
1. Diskette Drive
2. Hard-Disk Drive C
3. IDE CD-ROM Device
It seems I can use the SPACE button to either "enable" or "disable" any of these
choices. Whatever I enable gets a check mark next to it. I don't see how I can put
the three choices in any order- I'm just enabling one or more choices.
I've been enabling the CD-ROM device and restarting. The regular Windows splash
page will open if I don't press any other buttons.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tracy

I don't recall off the top of my head but you need to find the keyboard key that
moves the items up or down in the boot order, page up/page down ,arrow keys, try
the F1 key a stanard HELP key it may tell you.
Look at the bottom of the screen it should tell you what key to use.
It's there, I can't read it on the end you must find it.
But the Rom must be 1st in the listing
>1. IDE CD-ROM Device
>2. Hard-Disk Drive C
>3. Diskette Drive
--------------------
Don't give up just read..
Do you have the Manual/User Guiide for your computer it will tell you what you need
to know.
If you can't find it download from the NET
Good Luck

Hi again,
Actually, I don't have a problem selecting the CD-ROM drive with the arrow keys.
It's just that when I enable it, and disable the others, it doesn't start up from
the CD.
I'm trying to figure out if I should just enable CD-ROM and disable the other options,
or if I need them all enabled but in a certain sequence. If I need them all enabled,
I don't know how to sequence them, because I'm either checking (enabling) them or
not- I don't think I'm placing them in any order.
I'm sure I'm babbling incoherently now, but I hope you understand what I mean. I'll
keep searching for the answer.
I appreciate your help.

Don't disable them just move the rom to the top of the list then save and exit the
bios setup/
They all need to be enabled .

Boy, I'm pretty dense sometimes. Thank you for the explanation. Okay, I've set
the sequence and enabled everything. When I exit or restart (I tried both), Windows
starts up as usual. It doesn't seem to start up from the CD. I've tried 3 times
now with the same result.
What I am doing wrong here? Could the CD be bad? I just installed 2000 about 4
months ago (it was previously ME) and it worked fine.
I'm ready to throw this thing out the window :o)

If you can't get the cd to boot use this work around.
Download winME boot disk from:bootdisk.com
Run the file you downloaded and it will make a boot disk for you.
Then reboot the machine with it.
When you see the A: type Fdisk
REMOVE ALL the partitions (ALL OF THEM)
Then make a new one, at that point the machine will reboot.
Then when you see the A: type format c: /s
When it's done with the format reboot.
Then when you see the item called Used CD Rom Support select it..
Then when you see the A: put your win2k cd in the rom drive.
Then cd to the rom ( x: ) X is your cd rom drive.
Then type cd i386
You should see X:\i386
Now type winnt32
And win2k will now install..
---------------
You can also copy the i386 folder from the win2k cd to the HD,,,(this will help speed
up the install of win2k and you have a backup copy of it on the HD)
-----------------------
cd to the C: drive
At the C: type md ntsetup
Then type cd ntsetup
You should see C:\>ntsetup
Now type xcopy X:\i386 *.*
When it's done copying the files to your HD.
Remove the win2k cd and the boot disk and reboot your machine.
When you see the C:\> type cd C:\i386
You should see C:\>i386
Now type winnt32 or just the winnt
Win2k will now install to your HD.
After win2k is done with the install ,go into NotePad
and make a new text file called "win2k Product ID"
put you key number in that file for safe keeping.
Note*****
When you install win2k besure to put in the passwords when win2k ask for them Don't
just use the enter key and move on..
The 1st one win2k will askfor will be the Admin. password use one like 123456.
The next one it will ask for will be the USER ID and password, use your 1st name
for it like Tracy and use a password like 1234567...
You can always go back and use a strong password if you want to, like 1~2@3#4$5%6^
,this should stop just about anyone from guessing your password.
Just one more NOTE about Security
If you don't want anyone to use or boot your machine up with software "password cracking
software" unplug your 3 1/2" drive .
This will not stop the Pro.but it will slow them down.
and most of the software you now install will be from the rom cd disk anyway.
You can also help some one :>)

Just a type over (I use the i386nt folder most of the time)
If you copied the files to the HD and then install from that folder .
When you see the C:\> type cd C:\ntsetup
You should see C:\>ntsetup then type the install command.

Good evening, Aspen Bob-
As I re-read your instructions, I realized that I forgot to mention the reason for
the reinstall: I picked up a trojan (win32/banker "about:blank") which completely
screwed up Internet Explorer. I can't get to any website, let alone download anything,
and though I tried to remove the trojan, I couldn't do it.
Hmm... now what? Shall I sell my priceless 1989 Honda civic and buy a new computer?

When you format the HD the VIRUS will be gone.
Some times it's best to start over from sq.1.
Not all the time but because you can't get on the net that looks like your best
bet for now.
When you get it backup and running and you can get on the net download AVG and ZoneALarm
to keep you safe on the net..

Hi Bob,
Reformatting is exactly what I'd like to do. But since I can't seem to boot from
my 2000 CD, and since I'm unable to download the WinMe bootdisk from bootdisk.com
that you suggested earlier, well.... I'm not sure what to do.
Thanks for sticking with me on this. I'm sure there must be a way. Is there any
explanation why I'm getting the message "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup" when
I'm trying to boot from disk? And when I hit F1, the same message just repeats,
so if I continually hit F1 I get a page full of those same message? I've rechecked
the boot sequence, everything is enabled, and still can't boot from the disc.
Arrgh :o)

Unfortunately, the other computer I'm using is an iMac 333mhz without a CD burner-
yes, a veritable Flintstones-era computer! :o)
If this is my only option, I'll try to get a copy of that boot disk from someone
else.
Cheers!

Some motherboards will not boot the CD if it's not detected at bootup. Make sure
the CDROM is set to AUTO in the BIOS setup not NONE. It's best to have the CDROM
as IDE-1 MASTER (HD-C: is IDE-0 MASTER), check the jumpers.

Hey RevRat,
Thanks for the suggestion. The CD-Rom is set to AUTO. I don't know what you mean
about checking the "jumpers," so I'm not sure how to make CD-ROM= IDE-1 Master.
I appreciate the help as I'm completely lost in space now...

Mobos have two IDE cable connectors. IDE-0 & 1, each has a MASTER and SLAVE.
There should be a decal on the HD and CDROM to make it MASTER, SLAVE or CABLE SELECT.
Mobos can be very pickey. The particular cable you have may make you use CABLE SELECT.
Try everything.

XP OPERATING SYSTEM
I hope to be able to give you an easier solution Tracy. Download these two bootdisks
to another computer and double-click on them to start the makebootdisk procedure.
(So you'll need two formatted floppy diskettes.)
DELPART BOOTDISK & OLDBIOS BOOTDISK
(If you have a problem deleting old NTFS drives use the delpart bootdisk.)
With the OLDBIOS bootdisk put it in the A: drive and your clean Windows 2000 CD in
the CD-ROM drive and start the computer.
The OLDBIOS bootdisk should automatically re-direct the boot to the Win 2000 CD and
you should just have to press any key to boot from the CD.
Does your Windows 2000 CD have Service Pack 4? If not it is better to slipstream
Setrvice Pack 4 together with the core files from you 2000 Cd and make an .ISO file
with which to burn a Windows 2000 SP4 CD to a good quality CDR (Not a CD-RW!) so
that you don't have too much updating to do.
You can use AutoStreamer 1·0 (freeware) to do that for you.
Many CD copying problems are caused by a dirty or scratched CD. I just gently wash
the CD in luke-warm water with two drops of soap solution and a soft spongde and
then gently dry with a clean linen cloth.

Ok,lets use the work around.
Boot into win2k once you have win2k up and running pop in the win2k cd ..
You should see the main setup window for win2k now select the item called Browse
This CD.
Now click on the BootDisk Folder
Get 4ea. 3 1/2 out (new Ones ) now click on the item called makeboot, at this point
it will make a boot disk set for you....when it's done making the set (besure to
mark them 1,2,,3,4, ) put the number one disk in the drive.
Now exit from the win2k cd. (but don't take out the win2kcd you will need it at
reboot)
Now reboot the machine.
When the machine reboots the setup menu will load.
(you will need to use all 4 disks to get it up)
When you see the setup menu select SETUP (enter key)
Windows will ask you if you want to try and repair the OS you have...select YES...(R)
READ the botttom of the screen if you don't want to run the repair...
At this point you can have win2k remove the OS you now have and start over or just
run the repair item.
and hope for this best.
Good Luck

Makes me wonder also if the CD is an update CD (from prior OS) or a clean install
CD...I made that mistake before...last time I did that!

I guess this means I have to pop the case open and check the connectors? I'll see
if I can do this later. Many thanks for the help.

Hi Mac,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if I can find a way to download the bootdisks
and give it a try after work.

Just a brief follow-up:
For various reasons, I haven't had time to work on the computer lately. But I finally
got a new copy of Win2000 and have successfully reformatted! I suppose it was the
CD after all. Unfortunately, I'm now experiencing other problems which are preventing
me from installing any other software (maybe my CD drive suddenly broke?).
Thank you all SO MUCH for all the help, suggestions and encouragement. I really
appreciate it.
