No sound except CD

I recently upgraded the driver for my sound card (Realtek AC'97). Now only the CD player puts out sound. Uninstalled the device with the hardware manager and installed the original driver, still no sound except CD. Mike

Mike
Because they make so many drivers for the onboard AC97 sound device you should goto
the Mfg. of the motherboard to get the right drivers for win2k.
Or
You can download the one below it's the new one.
Version	5.10.00.5250
From:
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=206208
 logon=drivers pass=all
http://members.driverguide.com/index.php?action=dosearch&qm0=Realtek+AC%2797&qa5=19&qa7=1799&sm=s

But it can be a bit tricky to get the right one in place.
1st blow out the file you downloaded to a temp folder
i.e. c:\soundtemp
Then goto the Device Mrg. and Remove the Sound Device
Then reboot, at boot up windows should tell you it found new hardware and will now
install the drivers for it.
At this point tell windows to look in the c:\soundtemp folder for the drivers it's
looking for.
If the drivers are right for win2k it will install them and you should have full
sound for the machine.
If win2k hangs or ask you for a new item that's not in the soundtemp folder then
the drivers are NOT the right ones.

Then regroup and go get the right ones.
You can use this tool to tell you what sound device you have on the machine make
and model number and ver.

Aida32 - Enterprise System Information 3.93
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download183.html
Size: 3.1Mb

unzip it to C:\Aida32 and then run the aida32.exe to run the program
Or after you unzip it to c:\Aida32
Start/Run C:\Aida32\aida32.exe

Good Luck

Mike
Try it one more time but this time tell windows to cancel the install and then open
the Control Panel and hit the Add New Hardware icon and tell it you Have the disk.
Then point it to the soundtemp folder

Mike
One more note***
Besure you don't have the other items in the sound control mrg. SET for MUTE.
Doub.Click on the sound icon by the time, that will get you into the sound mrg.
Uncheck the Mute items if they are checked.

I wasn't able to remove using device manager, I kept getting a blue screen. Had to go into safe mode. Now when I try to use add/remove hardware from control panel, it doesn't find any driver info in the temp directory and trys to install the old driver

Mike
Try this
Goto the soundtemp folder you made to hold the files.
and look for a inf file, right click on it and select Install.
If all this fails go out and get a so so sound card for 20 bucks and disable the
onboard one from the BIOS and be done with it.
The AC 97 sound devices are not that good anyway.
They are cheap that's why they put them on alot MB's

Good Luck

There are about 10 inf files in a directory called "WDM", none of them seem to do anything when I select install. I'll take your adsvice about getting the sound card, thanks for your time!
