Win2k not showing monitor in device manager

I have reinstalled Win 2k and when I try to install the monitor driver (ACER AC713.inf) And go to the device manager there are no monitors or display devices in the list. I tried using Add/Remove hardware but when I get to the Locate Driver step and go to the driver location I get the error "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware". I have the latest driver from the ACER Web site and have contacted the ACER support but they don't answer. How can I locate the monitor in the device manager?

Provided you are in the US, you can grab the AC713 driver (.inf and .icm) from Acer PanAmerica.

You will download a SFX zip file "ac713_driver.exe".

  1. Unzip the contents to any directory, e.g., C:\Temp, with WinZip, 7-Zip, etc. Do not execute the SFX.
  2. At a command prompt, type "compmgmt.msc" and hit Enter
  3. From the Computer Management module, open System Tools (if necessary) and click Device Manager
  4. You should have a Monitors entry that lists either something like "Plug and Play Monitor" or "Default Monitor". If you do not have either of these entries, try running the Add/Remove Hardware wizard and let it scan your hardware. It should find *some* monitor.
  5. Double click (or right click and Properties)
  6. Click the Driver tab
  7. Click the "Update Driver..." button
  8. In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard, click Next
  9. Click "Display a list of known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver." and click Next
  10. Click the "Have Disk..." button
  11. From the "Install from Disk" dialog, select the directory to which you extracted the ac713_driver.exe and click OK
  12. Select AC713 and click Next
  13. Click Next
  14. Click Yes at the "Digital Signature Not Found" dialog
  15. Click Finish
Should be it.

Hope this helps,
JT

Thanks for your help. I have done all the steps you indicate and more but still cannot install the drivers for the monitor. When I use the "Add/Remove Hardware" function and navigate to the folder containing the newly downloaded drivers I get the error ""The specified location does not contain information about your hardware". Not sure what else to do. Any ideas?

Robert
It comes down to the right driver for win2k.
Download the one below and give it a try.
It's for ALL of them (3MB file)
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=24053
Logon=drivers  Pass=all
Windows will read the inf file(s) and if's it finds the right one win2k will install
it...
Just a note***do you still have the box/CD disk that came with the Acer you may
want to run it down and use it.
Good Luck

Well, I downloaded the zip file, unpacked it to a folder on the desktop, started the Add/Remove hardware process and got to the file ACER2000 and thought I got luck (with your help) but I still get the same error "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." There is still no "Display device" or "monitor" in the devices list. I have even gone so far as to reinstall the OS (twice).

Robert
Then it may not be using ACER drivers.
The box maybe taged as a ACER but it may not have ACER hardware inside.(chips)
Try this
Download aida32 it will tell you for sure what it is.
Then use that info to get the right drivers for it.
----------------------
aida32 download From:

Aida32 - Enterprise System Information 3.93
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download183.html
Size: 3.1Mb
This is the one I like , It will show you YOUR
CD Prouct ID Numbers and other SN#,of software you have
installed on your machine...so you can print them out
for safe keeping...
Just click on Software item (on the left) and then right click on the items
on the right and select copy and then open NotePad and paste it in
and print it out and put one with YOUR win2k cd...
********
Personal System Information 3.93
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html
Size: 2.9 Mb

Plus more below

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads9.html

unzip it to C:\Aida32 and then run the aida32.exe to run the program
or
Start/Run c:\Aida32\aida32.exe

New ver. of aida32 called Everest Home Edition
It has a installer and uninstaller with it..
from below:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download183.html

Plus get drivers from and check your hardware
Windows Catalog and HCL
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx

This is not a new monitor and it is definitely an ACER. I have been using it for a year on this same machine and have installed the drivers sevral times before. I wanted to do a clean install of the OS but now I am stuck with 16 color view and no monitors in the list. I will download the file you suggest and take a look later.

Robert
If you are stuck at 16 color mark it's NOT the monitor.
You need to updated your Video Drivers.
Use aida32 it will tell what make of video card you have and the model number, then
use that info to get the updated video driver.
Goto driverguide.com once you have that info and get the right drivers for win2k.

Just a Note***win2k comes with many video drivers but not all of them.
I'm sorry I didn't pick that up on your 1st post but your didn't say anything about
the 16 color max and that's key.

Have a good one.

Dunno. I noticed in your first post that you don't have a Monitor category showing in the Device Manager. I would think that if you let the Add/Remove Hardware wizard search for Plug and Play devices, rather than manually point it to the AC713 driver, it should find *some* monitor - "Plug and Play Monitor" or "Default Monitor" - which you could later update to the AC713 driver. If you don't have any monitor category, you can't update the driver for a non-existant device, thus the "The specified location..." message.

Check that you have the following generic monitor class registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96E-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Although, I don't know what you can do if you don't have one. It should be automatically generated by Windows when it does a PnP search for hardware. If you are going thru a KVM switch box, maybe connect the monitor directly to the video card.

Hope this helps,
JT

Hi all.
I have the same probleme.I had this same issue 3 years ago, manage to sort things
out but can't rember how...At this time I had a 4200ti. Now I have an asus 6800 GE,
winxp, asus A7n8x deluxe motherboard....There is how I got that pb:I had an issue
with my video card running with Smart doctor . My commputer kept rebooting. I had
to uninstall smart doctor. This pb was fixed. I decided to reinstall nvidia driver.
So I went into control panel, add/remove programm and uninstall nvidia driver......but
I think I also unstall nvidia nforce2 utilities (that came with motherboard).....I
rebooted, went into devie manager to updated driver. I realize that no display driver
was listed. So I add/removed hardware, choose display driver, browse to the location
of my my driver (78.1 and/or 77.). But when I locate the driver. I see the .inf file,
press ok, I then the name of my video card doen t appears, the windows is blank,
so I can't choose the model and can't press the "next" button that is grayed out......I
suspect a pb with motherboard driver. Try to rinstall them, but no go. Tried to reinstall
my old 4200ti, same pb....
Any Ideas??

Then you need the correct driver for your video card. Personally, I have never installed a driver for the monitor. If you plug it in, turn it on and you can see "stuff", that is all you need.

Crash Override
