Undoing "Hide all desktop icons"

I decided to hide all desktop icons and followed the instructions, but along with the icons off went a valued personally constructed wallpaper which I want back. The thing is, none of the tips to bring the previous situation back works/ deleting the new value, and also from "More information"/. Please help.

Tip: Run a free scan for common Windows errors ad

Magic Tweak and others like PowerPack Tweak will get them back in place.

MagicTweak is a special program designed to optimize and personalize Microsoft Windows.
It provides one-stop, instant access to a variety of Windows settings that can be
altered for a friendlier Windows environment.
This unique software makes it easy to tweak hundreds of hidden settings in Windows
XP/2000/Me/98, so there is no longer any need to dig through the registry looking
for that specific setting (from Start Menu,Desktop,IE skin,System Icon to System
Security) that just doesn't seem to be there.
With the ability to customize almost any aspect of Windows, you can become a Windows
expert almost instantly!

It's not FREE but it works great.

Just one more of them below.

Many programs will do the same thing
here's a good spot to find a list of them.

Some are free to try(shareware) and some are free.

Good Luck

Thanks most awfully indeed!!! I can't purchase software from where I live, so supplying the free possibilities was really great, and I do appreciate it. As it is evening already here, I will try tomorrow and let you know. The thing is, although the site is supposed to send me EMail notification of postings in the forum, it doesn't, and I checked purely by chance...

I have a Yahoo! account which serves me very well, and there are no typing errors... Anyway, this is a small problem, I will check Annoyances regularly, the problem is that I ran the free tweak you advised, and nothing happened...Even worse, I have noticed that the right click on the desktop doesn't function also, and I can't open a new file or folder! This is becoming very big trouble, perhaps a moderator could help, after all disaster struck after I followed Annoyances' advice by the book... Best regards!

Had a bit of a time figuring how to post here, but I made it.

Go to:
Start > Run > type in "gpedit.msc" > OK.
In the tree pane on the left, navigate to and select:
"Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows
Explorer".

In the right pane, locate the line that says:
1. "Remove Windows Explorer default context menu" and double click on it.
2. Is the "Not configured" button chosen? If it is NOT chosen, choose it and click
"OK".
3. Don't close the Group Policy editor yet, but check to see if your right click
has been restored on the desktop.
4. If the "Not configured" button WAS chosen or the above did not work, try choosing
"DISABLED" and click "OK".

If the Group Policy editor does not work, it will require a reg hack, and I am not
sure it is the same in Windows 2000 as it is on XP, so I will stop here.

Good luck.

For the record. The content of the reg key sent to you is as follows and IS different
from what BB advised at BBR and the reason I am posting the text of it here:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]
"NoViewContextMenu"=dword:00000000

After extracting the reg key from the .zip file, double-click on it to open it and
click "Yes" when it asks if you want to merge the key into your registry. This should
re-enable you to right click on your desktop. Please let us know if it worked.

As for some of the other suggestions given in this thread, simplicity is the key
to registry editing, not tweak programs that can confuse a user or do further damage
to their machine which is apparently what happened when other advice was given.

Regards,
CS
