Registry Damaged

I started getting messenger service pop-ups, stating "registry damaged" and directing
me to several websites, www.regupdate.net, fixreg32.net, ToFixReg.com, RepairWindows.net.
Has anyone else seen this? What can i do short of shutting down messenger to get
rid of this? The pop-ups come about 101-12 in a row, every several minutes... I ran
Hijack this, and spybot, can't find anything out of the ordinary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks, jdg.

Joe
Just a way to get you to buy software or to say try to.
To stop them disable the windows messenger and get a popup blocker.
FireFox comes with a free one (blocker) but you can find many of them at http://www.majorgeeks.com/
----------
Then download SCXP to turn off the messenger.
Service Controller XP 2.2.61 it's free stuff
Service Controller XP is a handy interface that allows you to control your Windows
(NT/2000/XP) services.
You can instantly see which ones are running and view detailed information about
all the standard Windows services.
In addition, the program provides information that lets you decide whether to enable
or disable a service.
It prevents you from accidentally disabling critical operating system services and
suggest whether to disable a service or not based on the use of your computer (e.g.
Default, Gaming, Internet Gateway etc.)

Good Luck

Thanks Dex, I turned the messenger service off, I can find my way around W2K pretty
well. I checked the registry, didn't find anything in the run or run once sections
for windows. I know this is just a ploy to get me to buy their software, but I'd
like to get it off this system. This is a system I am building for a friend, so I
don't have the luxury of time to find this nasty little bug... I don't know where
I picked it up... only installed 2 software packages, from what I believe is reputable
companies. Anyway, thanks for the update.

You're Welcome Joe
Use this tool to clean your machine up
--------------
run CCleaner
CCleaner 1.22.142
From:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191
CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimisation tool. That removes unused
and temporary files from your system - allowing it to run faster, more efficiently
and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast! (normally taking
less that a second to run) and Free.
NOTE *** about CCleaner
Take care with this program, computers are not smart they only do what you ask them
to do no more no less.
Read, read, read and then uncheck the item(s) that you are not sure about.
It will remove what you have checked...
Have a good one.

Joe
It's not a bug , it's called Spam in real time.
You have many back doors into windows and spammers will find them and use them.
But the messenger service (back door ) is the easy one that spammers use to get in
because the default is Auto./manual enable but once you close that door it will help
plus use a firewall and a popup blocker.
(Close the back and side doors into windows)
Note***what you can see you can use.
If you install a program like
Anonymous Web Sufing ver..3.41 it will hide you IP from every one on the net.

You can also help some one :>)
Please revisit your post so that others on this forum will know if the solutions
were helpful or not helpful .

Hi - like Joe in January, I am being plagued by regupdate messages. Unlike Joe I'm
a pretty basic computer user. I went to the majorgeek site but ran away again when
confronted by all the different options. If you can be bothered can you give me simple
instructions on how to disable the extremely irritating messenger service - I know
about downloads in theory but have never actually done one. Thank you in advance.

I too face this problem. What I do is to drag the pop-up into one corner of the
screen (usually the bottom right corner) and keep it hidden there. To drag the pop-up
you click the top blue bar of the pop-up and drag with the mouse button held down.
Once it is hidden this way, the pop-ups do not come again for that session.

Well, here it is August and the RegUpdate.net error messages have managed to get
into a computer and internet service that I had running for just a few days. I tried
to block the messenger from the control panel/Admin Tools/Messenger, right click
properties. Select Stop and then disable in the startup type scroll bar and then
OK. It seemed to stop my computer from running continuously at least. I will try
the other suggestions as well. I was trying to install a firewall and a popup blocker
through www.rogers.yahoo.com/ryop, but that kept failing everytime I restarted the
computer and it had to be downloaded through Internet Explorer. I am currently using
Mozilla Firefox and it seems more stable, but I do want the firewall protection and
an alternate popup blocker if that will help. Not sure if I can download one through
Mozilla. Recommendations?
