I have a question about What's
the difference between Windows 2000 and Windows XP?: The question I have is:
There is a flaw in windowsME and versions prior, You can overide the signon(hitting
ESC) and start using windows, Is this corrected in 2000, I know it's in XP.

Yes. And... there is a way to force users to log on with Windows 95/98/Me by the
way. Click

Is that right, Dex? I thought you had to logon to Windows 2000 and you couldn't just
press Cancel or Esc. Assuming it's set up with a password to begin with of course.

I may have got his Question wrong .
Sounds like he wants to logon to win2k without a password and just use the cancel
or esc key to by pass it.
That's why I said "No"
It's true you can use the Auto Logon but because win2k is a High Security System
you can by pass it.
The Auto Logon will not ask for a password it will just open the default desktop
(default user setup)
Did I get his Question wrong ?
Have a good weekend

Hi Dex, yep - I had to read the Marcel's question a couple of times too. I'm pretty
sure he was talking about the problem with Windows 9x that even if you have passwords
set up you can still just bypass them by pressing cancel at the logon screen. This,
of course, you cannot do with XP and he wanted to know if it was the same for Windows
2000 which was released nearly 2 years earlier. Oh well... I'm sure he's got the
info he needs now.

That's a good question.

Yeah, as the heir of NT throne, 2000 won't let you bypass the login without you implicitly
telling it to do so. That requires admin priveleges. Or a quick trip to http://ultimatebootcd.com/
which will give you a password changer/registry editor which will THEN give you admin
priveleges.
But still that's a good question. What are the fundamental differences between 2000
and XP?
Never-minding the obvious (and gaudy interface), 2000 and XP are pretty similar.
XP has roll-backs and fast user-switching, Product Activation, an easy-to-use firewall,
a warm-huggable face, and a 64-bit distro. And it logs time-restricted events.
Honestly, x86_64 firepower is the ONLY thing that interests me. And I think I'll
wait 'til copies of Vista x64 OEM are available at my preferred retailer (OEM translates
into "half the [...]ing price when bought with hardware."). After that, I can smile
at the pretty interface and then have BlackBoxLean to tell it to take a hike. XD

This thread started with a great question and thne went into password stuff.
The difference is this. Last year micorsoft quit free updates for Win 2000. You can
still get the last SP3, but for kSP4 you have to pay. For me and a lot of other hungrey
geeks, , that is the BIG difference.

activate win2000

win95,98,98se = no activation.
i have had them all. activateing XP has been nothing but a hassle. put on hold for
hours, disconnected, transfered around for hours.....
i want nothing but to play frisby with my copy of XP.
QUESTION: does win2000 require activation like XP,
or just type in the product key and go?
i want nothing to do with XP ever again.
i feel 2000 is just as responsible.
