Wake on lan through router?

I had WOL working great. I have DSL from verizon with a westell modem/router. I
opened the right ports on the westell. I went to http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/woli.aspx
and could send myself a magic packet and use putty to log in.

Now, I added a wireless router to the jumble, between the DSL router and the wireless
router:belkin F5D7231-4P. I turned the westell into a bridge, set the belkin to
do dhcp and am forwarding the correct ports to my computer which is hooked directly
to the switch with cat5e. If I leave my computer on, I can still log in using putty
(ssh client).

I have run out of things to try to get the WOL part to work. Is anyone able to help,
please?

The Belkins seem to be a little fussy on what they pass through, even when ports
are opened or forwarded. Try to DMZ the machine for a test to see if the packet
gets passed through. There are other settings in some of them that may help but
not all Belkins have the same capabilities.. Good luck getting useful info from
Belkin as that's who should have the best answer..

I found it works! send a broadcast UDP port through the router like 192.168.2.255 (the 255 being the broadcast). Works perfect! Firewall is on, only two ports open - SSH (tcp) and WOL (udp). Secure VNC, tunneling, anything! By the way, Belkin was worthless, they wanted to know if remote access was on. Why? I cant do router remote access because they only make the miniserver on port 80 and verizon blocks that. If I need to now, I can VNC my desktop and make changes "locally". Hoorah! Thanks for the help, though!

LOL.. They were clueless too when I had some questions not covered in their documentation..
I figured out my own problem (different than yours).. Your setup should work for
WOL. I'll have to remember that. I have been able to VNC through though without
a problem, haven't tried WOL yet. The Belkins are decent but have some issues and
I had to get 3 before I got one that worked right and wouldn't lock up.. The third
one they sent me for free and I didn't have to return the defective one(s).. (the
new draft N, don't buy it yet, they have a way to go IMO, for those considering them)

If you want to try WOL, you only need a few things - 1. configure BIOS to Wake on Lan 2. configure Power management tab of your Nic cards properties. 3. open a router UDP port and broadcast to x.x.x.255 4. send a magic packet from http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/woli.aspx (you need your IP and MAC add for the card you want to wake up) Have fun! I think its awesome to be able to wake my computer and vnc in from almost any internet computer. My next step is a java ssh terminal window called mindterm. This should allow me to eliminate the need for the putty ssh client. I am behind an http proxy, so I need to tunnel my vnc connection.
